Janklow's law license restored a year early
Two years after his conviction for manslaughter, the former governor and congressman will be able to practice again.

In a 4-1 ruling Thursday, the South Dakota Supreme Court said the former four-term governor, who resigned from Congress in 2003 after his manslaughter conviction in the death of Randolph Scott, 55, of Hardwick, Minn., can resume practicing law Feb. 15. That's one year before the suspension of his license was to be lifted.

"While there are public concerns regarding Janklow's driving, there was no evidence presented to suggest that the public needs protection from Janklow's conduct as an attorney," Judge Glen Severson wrote.

Russell Knutson, a farmer from Magnolia and a friend of Randolph Scott and his family, agreed. "My gut feeling is that he shouldn't get it back until the three years are up," Knutson said. "But there isn't too much we can do about it. That's our legal system."

But the ruling disappointed members of Scott's family, who have been frustrated by Janklow's attempts to fight the charges against him and, later, challenge his conviction and part of the sentence imposed.

2. Following that logic, why is Bill Clinton's law license revoked?
If Janklow could violate the law in such an extreme manner that he caused the death of an innocent driver, yet still not have his license to practice law taken away, why should Clinton's be revoked for giving an evasive answer to a question ruled irrelevant in the evidentiary phase of a case thrown out as having no merit?

Oh yeah, he's a Republican. Laws are only meant for Democrats. I keep forgetting the 28th Amendment.

4. Judge Severson, I respectfully disagree.
"While there are public concerns regarding Janklow's driving, there was no evidence presented to suggest that the public needs protection from Janklow's conduct as an attorney," Judge Glen Severson wrote.

I think we need protection from his conduct as a maker of laws, which undoubtedly says something about his lawyering as well. He screwed with the system to avoid punishment for years before he could no longer hide a wrongdoing. Just what I want for a lawyer--a scheister.

5. Any of this sound familiar?
In the months after the accident, Janklow said repeatedly that he did not remember what happened in the moments leading up to the crash. At trial, his attorney argued that Janklow, an insulin-dependent diabetic, missed the stop sign because he suffered a diabetic reaction.

He shouldn't be disbarred because he caused the crash. He should be disbarred because he's a lying weasel who lied his face off under oath in open court.
