'Guantanamo Detainees to be Transferred to Afghan Prison'

http://www.zaman.com/?bl=hotnews&alt=&trh=20060105&hn=28322

The British daily newspaper The Financial Times talks about a US plan to transfer detainees in Guantanamo to prisons in Afghanistan in its Thursday edition.

The Americans will construct a high-security prison in Afghanistan for the transferred detainees, according to the Financial Times, hinting that the location is near the capital Kabul and the prison is a remnant of the Soviet period in the country.

Part of the prison was modernized following a United Nations-backed judicial reform with European Union financing, the news article read.

Since the Washington administration is accused of holding captives without trial, it is under heavy international pressure; with this alternative solution the American government wants to dissolve the pressure.

The Financial Times article continues by claiming that the US administration will keep the “more dangerous ones” to itself for trial, and the remainder of detainees will be sent to the prison in Afghanistan.
