As Bush Paints Rosy Picture for the Economy, Small Businesses Feel the Wal-Mart Pain
January 6th, 2006
As a small business owner who supplies products to small retailers, I feel the Wal-Mart Pain. While Bush is out today painting a rosy picture for the economy, the fact is it is not so rosy for many, especially small business owners. In response to Bush’s speech today, Harry Reid said, “While some corporations are enjoying increased profits, the benefits of economic growth still have not reached many hard working middle-class families.” Ready wasn’t joking about the increased profits for corporations or the fact that “hard working middle-class families” have not benefited from the economic growth.
The economic reports don’t focus on small businesses, the little mom and pop businesses that are the cornerstone of America. As a small manufacturer/wholesaler of hand-made products I have the opportunity to talk with small business owners on a daily basis. The resounding message I always hear from my clients and my vendors are that sales are down, they cut back staff, and they are just hoping to hold on until the tide turns.
Nancy Pelosi said today that “Bush is seeking another round of tax cuts for the wealthy while working Americans are struggling.” Americans “feel the American dream slipping further from their grasps, and they know the reality is that this economy is not delivering for middle-class families.”
A press release yesterday from The Campaign for America’s Future shows from an analysis released Thursday by the Institute for America’s Future, that Wal-Mart sucked $20 Billion out of local economies this holiday season. The fact is, plain and simple small businesses can not compete with Wal-Mart and other large corporate discount chains.
