Feinstein (member of Judiciary Committee) in Advance of Alito Hearings
Statement by Senator Feinstein in Advance of Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings for Judge Samuel A. Alito
January 8th, 2006

On Monday the Senate Judiciary Committee begins the nomination hearings for Samuel Alito. Senator Dianne Feinstein released the following statement late yesterday in advance of the hearings:

“This is probably the most important appointment in more than a decade because it carries with it the balance of the Court on many critical issues. Justice O’Connor had a very unique role in that she often was the voice of moderation. Therefore Judge Alito’s views are very important.

If a Supreme Court appointment was just a mathematical computation of the law, it could be done by computer. But the fact of the matter is that questions of law are often influenced by individual’s judicial philosophy and temperament. Therefore it is important for the Senate to learn about Judge Alito’s views on key issues, such as:

2. Kennedy just issued a strong editorial against Alito

Kennedy attacked Alito's credibility stating that "the more we learn about him, the more questions we have about the credibility of his assurances to us."

You're either for Civil Rights or you're not.

Issuing a mealy-mouthed 'political' statement in the face of an obviously anti civil rights judge is worse than cowardice; it's an abdication of citizenship.
