Could I get some help from Clark supporters? |
|
Would any Clark supporters (or people who can remember world events when I was too young to pay attention) care to help me find holes in an article? http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?031117fa_factThank you very much in advance for any help you can provide.

"the stop-Dean candidate charged with keeping Democrats tethered to the center" -- I don't think Dean is particularly leftist, and I can't say that Clark is particularly tethered to the center himself.
Tommy Franks' opinion of Clark can be attributed to his status as a staunch Republican and extreme hawk intent on pleasing the Bush administration.
Shelton later took back his Clark integrity statement, didn't he?
... etc., etc.

7. "Shelton later took back his Clark integrity statement, didn't he?" |
|
Not publicly, not yet. After Milosevic tried to use Shelton's slam on Clark against him in The Hague, the prosecutor (Carla del Ponte?) called Shelton for an explanation. Supposedly he told her it was "just politics," as Clark has said all along, but so far neither Shelton nor del Ponte has gone public with Shelton's admission.
However, Norman Schwartzkopf did have the decency to admit that his slam at Clark was based on "hearsay" (i.e. Stormin' Norman and Shelton are friends) and that he doesn't know Clark personally.

Our political science teacher presented this article to us as "fact," so I thought I'd offer a bit of rebuttal, aided by the experts on the man (you guys).

Heck, I expect crap from the malevolent Republicans.
It's the baseless attacks and lies from friends that hurt more.

10. Another source of (mostly)positive info on Clark |
|
In case you don't know: David Halberstram's book, "War in a time of peace" (about the US and Yugoslavia during the 1990s) all but makes Clark out as a hero. It describes Clark's friction with other generals mostly in pro-Clark terms. It also presents Clark as a "hawk" on Serbia, but in context - it describes how Clark was outraged by Milosovic's repeated deceit and human rights abuses. Most other generals just didn't care. Agree or disagree with Clark's specific actions on Yugoslavia - but after reading that, you have to respect him.
David Halberstram is an incredible character reference because he wrote the definitive book on Vietnam- The Best and the Brightest - and was one of the young reporters who helped present the truth about what was happening.
Full disclosure- I'm a Kerry supporter but like Clark.

It is very detailed on Clark's battles with the Pentagon over Bosnia and Kosovo. One fascinating factoid is that William Cohen, the Secretary of Defense, and Clark both had Jewish fathers who died in their childhoods and both developed the same kind of drive to excell. Halberstram writes how Cohen's wife used to get a kick out of Cohen and Clark fighting all the time and they were like two sides of a coin. Another great book includes large sections on this: A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, by Samantha Power. She's endorsed Clark, but I doubt Cohen will.
