The New London Day: Voters Are Getting Restless (about Lieberman) |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 03:34 PM by Larkspur
Sen. Lieberman is reaping the skepticism about the Iraq war, President Bush's unpopularity.http://www.theday.com/eng/web/news/re.aspx?re=D030162F-674F-4EB0-A500-EE8C922BE0BCThree-term Sen. Joseph Lieberman might be tempted to dismiss his potential primary opponent, Ned Lamont, as yet another Greenwich millionaire with too much time on his hands. That would be a mistake. Sen. Lieberman would be short-sighted to underestimate the signs that many voters disagree with his stance about the war in Iraq. Some believe he has lost touch.
Such perceptions go a long way toward creating a sense of political vulnerability. As Sen. Lieberman knows, better than just about anyone, upstarts have been known to defeat well-known incumbents. He was a challenger, too, in 1988 when he took on formidable Sen. Lowell P. Weicker, Jr. — and won. And although Sen. Lieberman, who was then state attorney general, had far more political experience than Mr. Lamont, the senator can't dismiss the notion that few would consider challenging him unless there were signs of growing discontent with his record.
Consider: The Jan. 3 Manchester Town Committee vote which approved, by a wide margin, a resolution stating that Sen. Lieberman was not “acting in the best interests of the American public or the Democratic Party” and requested the senator “reconsider his unconditional support of President Bush” in regard to the war. The fact that former Gov. Lowell P. Weicker, Jr. said he was considering a run against Sen. Lieberman if nobody emerges to challenge him. Gov. Weicker said he will be watching Mr. Lamont's moves closely. His recent trip to Iraq, after which he said that the United States is making progress, was greeted with widespread disbelief here. <SNIP> ...in a country still rubbed raw by the manner in which the Vietnam War was conducted, the Bush White House did something unforgivable. It vastly exaggerated the danger Iraq posed to get the U.S. into a war in the Middle East, a conflict that now has become a war of occupation. The administration's reasons turned out to be false. That feels to many of the voters as if they have been lied to — and when Sen. Lieberman defends the war, no matter how honest he is in articulating an unpopular position, many voters believe he is supporting a conflict based on deliberate lies. They are angry and they have a right to be. <SNIP> A very well written editorial.
