A comforting Talking Point for all you radicals who want a fillibuster
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 04:15 PM by Dr Fate
Keep your powder dry!

That's right- keep it dry- for "the next time."

So always remember- when some upitty, sandal-wearing hippie insists that Democrats stand up to racist, facist, lying judges who are appointed by the most dishonest, corrupt, and unpopular president in history- here is what you say:

Keep your powder-puffs nice and dry! We will need it for "the next time!"

If that doesnt work, tell them to grow up, or remind them that the media will be mean to us.

11. No-no-no- wet powder is very unflattering. I want to be the next Lana.
Call Frist on his bluff? Sounds mean and agressive. it will surely get our powder wet.

Wet, Caked-on make-up is not pretty, or lady-like.

7. GUN POWDER?? Eww- sounds agressive. I think it is pretty make-up.
Gun Powder means fighting, agressiveness- ewwww- that's meany stuff.

I'm sure they are talking about make-up. Gun powder suggests actual battle and fighting- so it cant be that.

Cause really, that seems like something someone who wanted the republicans to succeed would say.

8. Ed Schultz says it, so do several DUers. My guess is it is a DLC T-point.
I've seen it come up on DU about 10 different times.

I agree with them too. We must keep our powder puffs dry. How can we look pretty for Bush and his WONDERFUL appointees with wet powder-puffs?

13. Well you've got a point, but I just don't see public support...
...for a fillibuster. The Dems needed to establish a scandal with which to try to bury the Alito nomination or to justify a fillibuster if it came down to it, and they haven't come up with that yet. I thought maybe Alito's membership in the rascist Princeton society could have been that, but it doesn't seem to be playing out that way. The Vanguard thing seems to be a non-issue with the media, so the Democrats aren't going to get anywhere with that. Executive power is where they really SHOULD bury him, because that is the scariest aspect of his nomination, IMO, but, and this surprises me, it seems that people aren't up in arms enough over the illegal warrantless fascist-like wiretapping to spark major controversy over that with Alito. So what do the Dems do? Abortion? That seems to be all they've got left, but that will be seen as a purely partisan battle.

So I'm just saying that strategically, it might not be a good move. But you are right that it could fuck the Court for a while to come. What is the answer? You want the Dems to fillibuster at all costs and I think they should pick their battles where they think they can win them. Its just a difference of opinion.

17. The public used to support Bush and the war in Iraq too.
And so many Democrats voted for the war, and went along with Bush on any number of issues.

We found ourselves going along with GOP/media manufactured perceptions rather than what was factual and right.

That strategy failed, did it not? The public eventually caught up with reality- just in time for the GOP to label us as "flip-floppers."

Tired of the soft-pedaling and accomodationism ? You're not alone. We can provide gentle corrective suggestions to those who encourage it. Personally I'm tired of a bunch of rich white men and their hangers on trying to make me the receptive party in nonconsensual, nonlubricated anal sex. I don't understand why our leadership doesn't feel uniformly the same way.

16. What ARE you talking about?
Has someone in power said no filibuster? I thought it was leaning that way. Even Big Eddie the Centrist sees it coming. And Eddie the Centrist didn't seem terribly bothered by the notion. He certainly didn't seem to think it "radical."

19. I like Big Eddie- but I dont think he wants a fillibuster.
I get the feeling that he is setting this up as a done deal. I hope I'm wrong.

And I have seen several DUers use that assinine "Powder" talking point in the past few days-and they are using it in the exact same context as they did when we kept it dry for Roberts.

It's Roberts all over again for some of us.

25. Honey, my powder is as dry as it's gonna git
This one is a no-brainer.

If failing to recuse himself from Vanguard cases doesn't do it, what will? Does that fact alone not tell all of us that money talks and democracy walks in Washington?

I watched that clown Specter yesterday and the rest of the White boys club and thought, where are all the black people and women who get to decide who the next SCJ is? Why do a bunch of greasy old men get to decide the fate of every woman in this nation?

Anyone who can hold back now is a coward. We've held back long enough. If our Dem representatives and even any intelligent Republicans cannot see the downfall of this nation in this nominee, they are deluded and need to step down so that people who actually care about this country - not just its corporations - can lead us.

27. The Establishment's NY Times has editorial saying Alito should be defeated
In today's edition the NY Times raises the same objections to Alito that Jonathan Turley raised earlier this week, Alito's support for an imperial Presidency:

Judge Alito, in His Own Words

January 12, 2006
Editorial

DOUBTS ABOUT THE NOMINEE'S HONESTY Judge Alito's explanation of his involvement with Concerned Alumni of Princeton is hard to believe. In a 1985 job application, he proudly pointed to his membership in the organization. Now he says he remembers nothing of it - except why he joined, which he insists had nothing to do with the group's core concerns. His explanation for why he broke his promise to Congress to recuse himself in any case involving Vanguard companies is also unpersuasive. As for his repeated claims that his past statements on subjects like abortion and Judge Bork never represented his personal views or were intended to impress prospective employers - all that did was make us wonder why we should give any credence to what he says now.

The debate over Judge Alito is generally presented as one between Republicans and Democrats. But his testimony should trouble moderate Republicans, especially those who favor abortion rights or are concerned about presidential excesses. The hearings may be short on fireworks, but they have produced, through Judge Alito's words, an array of reasons to be concerned about this nomination.

You and I don't always see eye to eye on some things, but on this one we're both on the same page. Keep on shouting out on this and I'll do the same. If Alito gets in, we will see the complete and total take over of the Imperial Presidency, and then all the dry powder in the world won't do a damn bit of good. Keep up the good work:toast:
