Filibuster, Goddammit!! It is time to have some cojones!
(cross-posted at dailykos)

King George's approval is 38 to 40%, republicans all over the place are being indicted, and the public is pissed off about being lied to over the Iraq war. Did anyone hear Bush's tone and breathing in his "town-hall" meeting yesterday?? He was so fricking nervous, in front of an approved audience, I thought he was going to stroke. He calmed down a bit, but then got hyperventilating again during question time.

Use your senses - listen to him. He is breathing hard, he is pausing, trying to get the audience to like him, he has a whine in his voice. He KNOWS he is going down.

So filibuster, goddammit. Filibuster against Mr. 38%'s nominee, filibuster because Alito does not respect the rights of women, blacks, Hispanics, and he thinks we should have a King. Filibuster because the bastard lied to the Senate before and lied now. These are EASY concepts for Americans to understand. Filibuster and show the rest of the country that the Dems have a fighting spirit. And if we are wrong, and the public punishes us in November, which I really, really don't think is going to happen, well, we are losing now anyway. At least we will go down fighting. Let the republicans go nuclear - the public distrusts them they will distrust abuse of power even more. Push them into it - let them implode. They are not smart - just corrupt, and unafraid to grab power. We are smarter - Reid vs. Frist is no match.

C'mon Harry, we need you to put on your boxing gloves and kick some neo-con ass.

So Senators - you know what you need to know. Get the rumbling going, send out some aides to talk about filibustering off the record. And do it. Fight for your country.

6. They need to filibuster even though the Republicans will probably...
take away that option forcing a straight vote. However, once Alito's on the bench & begins to vote in ways that are against the American people, the Democrats can at least say that they did everything that they could to stop this. Otherwise, the Republicans will just cast it into our faces that the Democrats also supported him because they could have filibustered him. (Circular logic but they always do it.)

71. You're right a filibuster
won't stop this from happening but it will put a dark blemish on his nomination that will be with him for his tenure as a Supreme Court Justice. It will take a lot of wind out of his sails.

I'm 58 years old and It's difficult to accept the fact that the courts will probably be conservative for the rest of my life. We have to stop being afraid and start demanding that we be heard. Today is as good a day as any.

I phoned Senators Boxer, Feinstein and Feingold. Come on everybody, get off your butts and make phone calls to Senators and get all your family and friends to do the same.

whose meanness toward the disabled is galling as is his treatment of women, minorities, children and aliens seeking asylum. He refused to strongly support ANY of our basic rights and would subvert the constitution. If the Democrats do not filibuster, they will lose what little respect they have.Right now, the Congress has a very low approval rating; both Republicans and Democrats are in the thirties. People want real leadership. If the Democrats can't fight this one, then they will loose big time and will deserve it.

34. Yep, only one and not even that, really
because as soon as the Dems filibuster, they'll go nuclear to end it.

I say filibuster this creepy freeper and let the Republicans go nuclear! It's true, the public is sick of their over-reaching grabs for power. I think if they go nuclear, it will further erode the public's trust in them and highlight their un-democratic, totalitarian leanings. Let them do it. They're going to do it anyway, no matter which issue we pick to filibuster. If the Dems do it now, it will dispell some of their "spineless" aura and like another poster said, they will be able to say they did everything they could to stop the extreme right from taking over the highest court in the land.

No mealy-mouthed excuse about wanting more information. Come out, say Alito is unacceptable, say they're filibustering to stop the appointment, and that if Frist decides to do an end-run around Senate rules, promise to shut down the Senate.

This is not the kind of thing that can be done half-way. They need to stand, and brag that they stand, and spit in the eyes of the GOP.

There were plenty of ways to raise doubts about Alito but the Senators on our side just couldn't manage doing their homework. So they wasted all this time on Vanguard and CAP and came across as bad as Joe Macarthy.

We need new leadership in this Party. Those dinasours have to go.

44. Read all the points about Alito raised here and then
raise the same doubts with court cases. Explained in a way that would appeal to and be understandable by the American public, not us. I know what I believe. They didn't have to grandstand for me. I can't tell you what cases - I'm not a lawyer or legal scholar but the Senators are. We know he's bad - and all we had to do was prove it - with something better than a 12 year old promise and a 1985 job application. I'd prefer we sound like we know what we're doing - not like a bunch of blowhards.

this is the highest court in the land, and the Senate will make this final choice! Why should we be raising doubts when only the best should even be considered? 76. I didn't see bad behavior, although I saw an organized effort
on their part, along with the msm to make it look and sound like there was bad behavior. For one, Kennedy didn't jump on Specter. It was the other way around. For another, no one called Alito a bigot, but Graham carried on with the assistance of a crying Mrs. Alito, and made everyone think that that was what had happened. Demagoguery in it's most blatant form.

Anyway, Alito doesn't look all that healthy, so let em kill the filibuster and live to regret it.

50. Deep breath people!
We cannot win this fight! As far as I know, they have all the Repubs voting for this guy. We drop a filibuster and in this case they use the nuclear option. We have to be pragmatic about this and accept that Alito will be a supreme court justice.

Now that does not say that the democrats cannot use the senate debate to voice their displeasure with this nominee. I think they should, loud and clear.

If they use the nuclear option now, every right wing wacko is going to get nominated for every court in the nation and the system will be clogged with them. Let's pick our fights.

52. Uh, right-wing wackos have been nominated and recess-appointed already
That's all who've ever been appointed to the courts under Bush, and the system is already clogged with uber-conservative activist judges masquerading as strict constructionists.

If the fight we lose is merely a Senate vote, let's fight the battle. The real war comes with DC Democrats raising holy hell about an imperial presidency, and Alito is a major part of what's wrong.

The Democrats must filibuster Alito. If he can't provide a straight answer about what the hell the definition of settled law is, why should we want someone like that on the Supreme Court? Regardless of his politics, if he can't answer the question, he either has a subversive agenda or he's incompetent, and you don't want either sitting on the court. It already has Slappy Thomas in that role anyway.

Furthermore, this guy has an elephantine memory on details in case law, but he can't remember anything about his association with CAP? We might as well dig up Justice Taney if we want such a bigot on the court. It's another reason to filibuster.

If the Democrats filibuster this guy, it calls the Republicans' bluff. Go ahead, use the nuclear option. We dare you. If they do it, they destroy the Senate and prove that they are all about party before country -- and it will energize Democrats everywhere like nothing seen ever before. If they don't do it, they lose their poster-child for the right-wing agenda, Frist looks like a total wuss, and their base will go stark-raving nuts.

In my best text Banderas voice, I say, "Vamos, Deemocrats. Do eeet. Feeleebuster Aleeto. Maybe you lose the battle, but you ween the war."

53. i think by filibusting
we energize their base. their mouthpieces shouting in unison they voted for ginsburg with no problem and yet we want to destroy alito! i dont' see this as a win for the democrats. the country loses either way because we get this guy on the supreme court and now thomas will have two people to help him do his homework.

54. Heh. Two people to help Thomas with his homework. I like that.
The thing about Ruth "don't call me Darth" Bader Ginsburg is that she was entirely forthcoming in her committee hearing, whereas Alito wasn't. Plus, wasn't Orrin Hatch practically her sponsor? Now contrast Ginsburg with Harriet Myers. If the Republican base had a problem with Myers (who didn't get that all-important "upperdown vote" that Bush always yaps about), the Democrats are entitled, no, DUTY-BOUND, to find fault with Alito and filibuster him because he is a flawed nominee and wrong for this country.

The Republican base is already energized. They have 24-hour cable "news", hate radio, and politically active churches charging them up like toddlers chugging Mountain Dew. We can't be afraid of these people. They want to remake America into something monstrous, and we can't let them do it. America teeters on the edge of some Christofascist dystopia, and we cannot let history say that people like you and me just let it happen.

Alito is where the Democrats draw the line in the sand. I'll agree with you that they will probably lose out with the nuclear option, but that will backfire against the Republicans in the long run. Ha, yes, and maybe in the short run, too.

56. Don't look now but their base has been energized. Where have
you been since 2000. Do you ever watch Faux News? They own the House, the Senate, the Presidency, the Judiciary, the Media, and some of the Democrats. What will it take to "energize" you?

55. I agree lets pick our fights. FIGHT EVERY SINGLE ISSUE FROM
NOW ON. Good gravy, what is the worst thing that can happen if theY eliminate the filibuster for judicial nominees? you say "every right wing wacko is going to get nominated for every court in the nation..". HELL THE F*** O. That is happening now. A filibuster may be futile but at least it would show that our Demo representatives give a sh**. Just how long do you suggest we wait to "pick our fight". Our Demo representatives need to show us that they are either for us or against us. We can impeach Bush but once Alito is in, it is for life. Forgive me for picking on you, it isn't just you, but it is way past time to fight.

64. After what the radical right did to Meirs
they have absolutely NO right to ask for an upper-down vote!! Also, all of the civil rights groups are lining up against Alito, with TV commercials and ads.

72. We have the votes to prevent closure on a filibuster
Alito can be kept out of SCOTUS even if pukes like Holy Joe vote for him.
