Poll question: Will the Dems unify & filibuster Alito? |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 10:37 PM by gulfcoastliberal
Ok, this is it. The replacement for the "moderate" Sandra Day O'Conner (who did vote in favor of the 2000 coup).
The "powder" is bone dry. The minority party in the Senate has procedures, such as the filibuster, to stop tyranny by the party in power. Now is the time to stand united. Now is the time for Harry Reid to prove himslef a true leader. Alito must not pass. The consequences of his confirmation would likely cause irreperable harm to our nation for decades.
(Spelling edit) + Edit to "Will"

4. Well...in that case.... |
|
I dunno. :)
We'll just have to see.
I can say that I have a really bad feeling about what will happen if they don't, though.

|
Repubs in the gang of 14 will stick with us, they change the rules and we lose because only 50 Repub votes would be needed for them to approve Alito for the Supreme Court?
Even if we filibuster, will we keep him off the court?
I haven't had as much access to the computer lately (lap top is sick) so I haven't seen anything on this specific issue.
Is there any reason to think a filibuster will actually keep him off the court?

crawl.
Will that stop Alito or is he going to end up on there no matter what?
I'm just asking because I'm wondering if I'm missing something.
I agree about what a complete disaster he would be on the Supreme Court. My question is - do we actually have a way to stop it from happening?
We have to have 50 (51) votes to stop them from changing the rule so that filibusters can't be used on Judges. Is there any way we will have 50 votes. I saw somewhere today that Chafee has said he is undecided. Any others?
I'm looking at this practically right now.

9. It won't stop Alito, but it will stop our government. |
|
They break Senate tradition in a power grab, we throw in the wrench. That's it.

15. If the execution of the nuclear option is succesful, he can't be stopped. |
|
The "shutting down" of the Senate is a proposed reaction to the nuclear option.
Graham, DeWine, and Warner who are all "Gang of 14" members have said they would go nuclear if they didn't agree a filibuster was an "extraordinary circumstance"

6. Plus the repukes lose filibuster power, too. |
|
What goes around comes around. And as BGL notes, we can use parliamentary procedures to halt senate business. Now is the time for the dems to act like an opposition party, not the slightly kinder corrupt party. This is a defining moment.

7. I think there will be 60-65 votes for confirmation, filibuster? No. |
|
My count has
Baucus Byrd Conrad Dorgan Johnson Landrieu Lieberman Lincoln Nelson Nelson Pryor
As likely votes for confirmation, along with all 55 Republicans.
Lets hope they prove me wrong.

21. Byrd has done great things for this country |
|
And assuming he votes to confirm Alito, which by all means is not a given, it will be because he respects the right of the POTUS to put forward nominees, and have them confirmed if they are qualified.
Byrd is an institution in WV, he'll be in the Senate until he decides to leave, or God does for him.

They are there for show, nothing more. How many of them are in on it? :tinfoilhat: Even if that's not true, they certainly aren't representing the interests of us little people. We are so fucked. :(

....and we'll show those fascist-loving repugs just who they're messing with, NEXT TIME....they had better watch out because we're going to get seriously mad and fight, NEXT TIME....
....and come November, if they're still lieing and saying bad things about us and they win, that'll be the final straw, because we're going to get very very very mad and fight even harder, NEXT TIME....
