Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 10:46 PM by autorank
There is still a chance to stop Alito. It ain't over yet.

CALL YOUR DEMOCRATIC SENATOR AND DEMAND A FILIBUSTER.

THE ISSUE IS CHOICE, THAT'S THE ONE THAT HAS PEOPLE WORRIED.
If this guy gets in and tries to reverse Roe, there is a fear that
those who stood by will be held accountable. No kidding!

If your state has a Democrat in the Senate make the call.

ALSO, call Feingold. He's central.

Two free numbers for D.C Capitol Switchboard: 1-866-340-9281 and 1-866-340-9279

IT'S ALL ABOUT PRESSURE, LETS APPLY SOME!!!!

Senate Directory: Please CALL then send emails. Be sure you're in the Senator's state (except for Feingold who should hear form all of us).

My Senators are Warner and Allen. Calling Republicans is a waste.

More Dems, more messages, more calls.

Calls do the trick, emails help too. Why not do both.

contacting them and saying if they vote to nominate you will do everything you can to get out and vote them out of office next time. I mean, it might be worth a shot.

If the Senate Dems fillibuster, they will mobilize the base for this fall. If they do nothing, the base may punish the party this fall. What do we elect these guys for? To represent us. And the majority of Americans and the vast majority of Democrats want to protect Roe v. Wade.

41. thanks, you are right, a filibuster should be mounted.
He refused to say Roe vs. Wade is "settled law", so there is no doubt what he plans on doing. But I also think, perhaps even more ominous (if that's possible) is his attitude re the presidency. He thinks the president should be able to operate without checks and balances. Basically, he thinks the president should be free to decide what laws he will respect and which he willl ignore and that he will decide if he needs to inform Congress or the public when he decides to break a law. This really is a prescription for a disaster.

On individual liberties this guy is way out of step with about 80% of Americans. I am sure he does not think he is a Nazi, but he is. Does a Nazi ever really realize he is a Nazi? Once he is on the Court and people start to realize how bad he is, it will be too late to do anything about it!

This issue is JUST TOO IMPORTANT FOR ANYONE TO SIT BACK AND BE A SPECTATOR. IF EVER YOU WANTED TO DO SOMETHING 'THAT MATTERED' THIS IS IT. CALL, EMAIL, APPEAR ON THE STEPS OF CONGRESS. TELL THEM TO FILIBUSTER. EVEN IF IT FAILS THEY WOULD BE MAKING AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT THAT THIS GUY IS SO FAR OUT OF STEP THAT HE MUST BE STOPPED BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

All the media types are talking like this guy is a 'shoo-in'. Well, I think they should check with the people before they 'make that decision'. There were people elsewhere who thought "OH, things couldn't get that bad." but in their naivete they proved to be dead wrong.

Once civil liberities are compromised, just a little bit, it becomes easier to squeeze them a little more and a little more. And before you know it you can't even speak up to protest without putting yourself in considerable jeopardy. DON'T THINK IT COULDN'T GET THAT BAD HERE - WE ARE NOT IMMUNE TO EXTREMISM AND DEMOGOGUERY.

Please email, phone, AND call for a fillibuster. THIS TIME IT REALLY MATTERS!

46. Repetitive phone-calls would be good.
I think they should be told re the "extraordinary circumstances" agreement - THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCE - this guy's beliefs are known. HE believes in a presidency of unchecked power. He believes in unwarranted and unreasonable search and siezure (in disagreement with the majority of judges on the bench!).

Also, you can say IT'S NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE DEALS WITH THE DEVIL. And also, we who were not there did not make any deals and you weren't speaking for us when you agreed that if the nominee was at least not a serial criminal you'd lay down and let the totalitarian majority party have it's way. Tell them they had no right to make such a deal!

47. My email to Mary Landrieu
Please consider filibustering Judge Alito. During the Reagan administration, he is the one who originated the practice of the presidential "signing statement." When a president signs a bill into law, he/she can write a statement on the bill that in effect becomes the way the president chooses to execute that law, obey it or disobey it.

Bush wrote such a statement on the recently signed anti-torture law, passed overwhelmingly by both houses. In essence he wrote that he reserved the right to disregard that law should he deem it necessary.

If Alito is confirmed, that means that the Supreme Court has tipped in favor of a party whose president believes he may disregard any law overwhelmingly passed by Congress if he disagrees with it and writes a "signing statement" on it. Imagine what this what have meant had Nixon exercised this when Congress voted to no longer fund the Vietnam War!

Your support of the filibuster would be a way of standing up for the continuation of the three branch system, of an independent judiciary and against the slow devolution of the executive branch into the seat of a tyrant.
