The Crying Game - today's Neil Lisst cartoon - the Alito hearings
As promised, this one is for the gang here at DU.

Hopefully, it will be liked in other quarters, too.

Or not.

Thanks for reading!

Neil

5. hey it's a short read as cartoons go
sometimes you gotta be a little wordy to make comedy work... Back when i did commercials, comedy was always hard to write well, especially in a 30 sec. spot. if I had your gift it would have been easier.

chip off the old block

I've written tv and radio commercials for Dem campaigns in the past, as well as print media ads. It's an art form.

11. Who's crying now?
old song from the 1950s, I think

Don't you love how they like to turn it around? It's not about his being in the organization. No, it's about how MRS. ALITO WAS CRYING!!

If I had the ability to call on my artist buddy in Canada to draw like Tom Tomorrow does - you know, a lot of frames at once - I'd do one where every time there's a tough decision, a crisis, they'd bring in Mrs. Alito to start crying.

*IF WE DON'T LET BUSH SPY DOMESTICALLY, WE'LL MAKE MRS. ALITO CRY!

*PASS THE PATRIOT ACT OR WE'LL MAKE MRS. ALITO CRY!

*VOTE TO INCREASE THE DEFICIT, OR WE'LL MAKE MRS. ALITO CRY!

6. Good one, Neil.
You know, it starts to add up. They get coached by the whole Counsel office at DOJ plus Graham. Stephanie posted pictures of the red and white "Confirm Alito" signs, Alito kissing babies and signing autographs. The family wears those colors to the hearing. Mrs. Scalito sits sandwiched between known Thug handlers. A few minutes after her stunt with Graham, the Swiftboat PR firm has a whole campaign together.

They never wanted Miers. They always wanted Scalito.

He fits their M.O. down to his toe nails.

8. My theory is they knew how to make her cry, and used it.
Plus, people medicated on downers tend to boohoo easily.

I'm serious when I say WE are the ones who should be crying.

Especially when they die young. My dad died about the same age your Andy was, although many years ago.

Thanks, Sfexpat.

32. I lost a lot of friends in Vietnam and my dad about the same time.
Then time passed, and for a long time, not too many. Now, they're dropping with far too great a regularity. Aunts, uncles, friends' parents, and friends.

It's a funeral every two months now.

Dying is part of living.

33. Sure and it can be terrible. This last year has been, for me.
I read Joan Didion's last book -- The Year of Magical Thinking. It didn't help at all in the theedy - weedy way. But, it helped quite a bit.

Be well.

10. Not direct. I just cut through all the bull and restated it.
The notion that some guy who is up for the Supremes can't remember anything about an organization he put on his job application/resume in the mid 1980s for a political job with the Reagan administration is laughable.

He's such a liar, and they coached him to lie that way.

15. Thanks for the kudos.
Kipling warned us to treat praise and blame as equal imposters, but what the hell did he know?

Speaking of which, watch me segue.

Alito was merely taking up the white man's burden when he joined the CAP.

(oh, that felt GOOD!)

18. CNN needs to read my cartoon today!! Geez I just heard them ...
"The nail in the Democrats was Wednesday when Mrs. Alito cried after the harsh questioning of Democrats."

SHUT THE HELL UP!!

It's not even true. Not even close to true. And Mrs. Alito's emotional response has no place in this hearing. Our TV media have completely lost their way. They are covering this like it's the Jerry Springer show.

Oy friggin' vey!

22. Isn't it the truth? We have 300 million at risk. She's not our worry.
So what if his wife cried? What a ridiculous basis for anyone to have an opinion about HIM and his appointment.

I suppose if THK had cried when they savaged her, Kerry would be president today.

Or, he Diebold hadn't helped them steal it, of course.

20. I swear that if Biden votes FOR Alito, his presidential hope are over!
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 08:05 AM by Neil Lisst
I've always liked Joe, and I think he's got some shot at the nomination, unless he votes for Alito.

I will oppose for the nomination any Dem who votes for Alito. The MAIN reason I support Dems for president is the Supreme Court appointments. The main reason I have supported candidates for the Senate is the Supreme court appointments.

Many Senate Dems caved in 2002, and in my opinion, anyone who caves on this vote is on my permanent shit list. I'm never going to favor driving people from the party, but if Biden votes FOR Alito, Johnny Fontaine never gets that part!!

21. If Democrats don't filibuster this turkey ...
...then we need to seriously reexamine where we are headed as a party.

Bush is screwing up by the numbers, and where is our leadership? Why has no significant action been taken by any of our leaders in the past 4 weeks?

I accept that guys like Ben Nelson are lost on a vote like this, and I'll give them Lautenberg because he's already compromised himself. Anyone else breaks ranks, though, and they will disappoint me severely.

I'm really upset that our committee members were so ineffective, so willing to be cordial, when contentiousness was called for. They should have started a big fight the first day. Too many people trying to kiss the ass of the perceived TV audience.

The saying comes to mind

LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY!!

23. The Dem witnesses just now were GREAT. Go Kate Michelman.
I've always liked her. She had a story that justified her crying, but she didn't. It's the story of women in America before they got real rights beyond voting.

Prof. Ronald Sullivan of Yale was very good, too.

34. It's my favorite of the week!
I sure hope the Neil Lisst site is working for me tomorrow. I like to do the week in review here, where I post all the images in one post, one thread, on Saturdays at DU.

It allows people who want to read the whole week on Saturday to do so without going to the site and the table of contents.

Plus, I try to have themes in a week, let people see them all together.

My personal favorites don't have any people, just places with speech bubbles. When a person is drawn, the quality of the drawing or caricature can override the message. With the capitol or the White House, that doesn't happen.

I have not been able to access my cartoon website in at least 3 hours, and cannot figure out why. I don't know if it is showing up for others or not, and need to know so that I can troubleshoot.

Do you see the Alito cartoon here when you click on it? Thanks.
