W's backdrops-Do you really think this is an accident?
Okay first off that is the Mississippi state flag and you can piss and fritter about that if you want but ---DO you really think that this is any accident? NOTHING they do is left to chance.

Does anyone think that this ISN'T meant to be a message to *some* of his base given that this is MArtin Luther King holiday weekend? Or am I reading too much into it?

BTW_ today is "Lee-Jackson Day" in Va. and Ga. They had to split them up due to protests from both sides. Of course, they could have just had MLK day....right?

Anyway here you go.

Bush, visiting the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast Thursday for the first time in three months, hailed marked improvement despite warnings to lower his expectations about the pace of recovery. 9. Good point
Well they must think that the black vote is g-o-n-e anyway (thank you Kanye West) so why not fan the flames on this one.

Mississippi has meant "White" and New Orleans has meant "black" throughout this whole thing. As if there aren't any blacks in Mississippi :eyes:

On last thing-I have posted this several times here on DU---don't be surprised if someone drops the N word and they have a whole package of talking points ready to go on it. I can smell it in the wind with this crowd.

5. As much of an accident as the "Mission Accomplished" banner...
...that Karl Rove "knew nothing about," because it was put together by the military personnel on the USS Lincoln, and he had "nothing to do with it."

30. The day after Bush gave his "Mission Accomplished" speech
on the deck of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the Old Man of the Mountain lost face in the Granite State of New Hampshire, bastion of Republican bedrock thinking. Apparently, the dignified and unforgetable Old Man could not bear the shame that BushCo has brought upon the Republicans. A complete and tragic loss of face.

7. the GOP sold out to racists after 1964
when the Dems sponsored the Civil Rights Act and disowned their racist past. Having been on the receiving end of hate and prejudice, I'd say that the repukes cater to the people who prefer to hate than to think.

11. That's no accident. You'd think Mr. I'm-a-uniter-not-a-divider
wouldn't make a national speech in front of such a divisive symbol.

Oddly enough, just as Abramoff and Reed were wooing the religious right on gambling while lobbying for the casinos, Bush has done more to turn the GOP Crime Family into an equal opportunity employer than anyone else, while at the same time he reassures this base.

12. The photographer took the photo on purpose, I believe.
To make Bush look bad? And to show that he (or his handlers) should have had enough sense to make sure that flag wouldn't be directly behind him even if it is a state flag.

25. I agree completely...
the photographer is clearly making an editorial comment about der Hitl..er...Bush. :)

I love it when photographers are stinkers like that.

It's just like when photographers at the AG's office always used to take those shots of Asscrack with the naked boobies of Justice right behind his head. It always brought a smile to my face. :D

Afterall, aren't backdrops supposed to highlight the speaker? There you go...this provides a perfect frame for Bush's statements...what a joke!

17. A little history of Mississippi's flag...
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 03:09 PM by flpoljunkie
http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/flags/ms_flag.htm

Story of flag at link above. Excerpt:

The new state flag design was similar to the 1894 design except that the canton corner color was changed from red to blue and the representation of the Confederate Battle Flag was replaced with 19 small white stars surrounding one large white star. The 19 small stars represented the number of states that were already part of the Union when Mississippi joined in 1817. The large white five-pointed star in the center represented the state of Mississippi.

When all the votes were counted the message was clear. The 107 year old Mississippi State Flag would continue to fly over the state. The vote, nearly 2-1, sent a clear message that Mississippians valued the historic symbolism of the 1894 flag.

(That flag is the one prominently displayed behind Bush.)

Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 03:13 PM by LizW
There would have been an incident. I would have offended half the state of Mississippi when I said, "Oh, HELL, no, there's no way I'm standing up here being photographed in front of that.

"Yeah, I know about your heritage and all that, but it AIN'T HAPPENIN'."

27. Actually, yes...these do look accidental.
These are really bad visuals for Bush!

Normally they have some fancy backdrop custom built to insure that the back drop = the message..like recently "Plan for Victory" when he gave his Iraq speech.

Why was there no backdrop this time saying "Rebuilding the Gulf Coast" all over it?.. I mean even if it's gonna be a lie, you'd think they'd still do it anyways..

Looks like a screw up to me.. Was Karl having to give another deposition and too busy to make sure it was done "right"?
