3. no matter what, i'm a sceptical creature at best.
i don't rest my political ambitions or hopes on any one event.

in fact i would be happy to know that the democratic party would get behind closed doors someplace
and comeout with a comprehensive long term strategy for taking back all the brances of government -- except of course the corporate.

i'd love to see them reinvigorate their relationship with labour, healthcare, etc.

how upset i am isn't determined by one event like alito -- but a series.

5. strange wording in your poll
can't really answer'...extremely upset at the Democratic Party'

Certain key members, yes.

As you know the Democratic Party is not monolithic, as say, the Reublican party is. My reaction would not be directed at the entire Democratic Party, I mean, really.

13. That's what the leadership is for: To make the party monolithic in extreme
cases such as this one.

I am sure there is a recruiting office where you live. Have you signed up yet? I hear they dropped the requirements, so if you were rejected before, you should be a shoe in this time.

Buh Bye :hi:

10. and I would stop contributing to the democratic party as a whole
the DNC specifically. Individuals would get my support, but NOT one penny would go to the group who haven't essentially represented me for the past 6 years

I would also probably change my party affiliation to undeclared, or independent, but hopefully none of that will happen, and they will do the right thing

Remember leahey is delaying the vote. I feel something is in the works, at least I hope so

14. They can't filibuster without 41 votes.
Don't blame all of the Democrats. Blame the DINOs. The ones that probably won't filibuster are the Dems in the Gang of 14:

Joseph I. Lieberman, Connecticut
Robert C. Byrd, West Virginia
E. Benjamin Nelson, Nebraska
Mary Landrieu, Louisiana
Daniel Inouye, Hawaii
Mark Pryor, Arkansas
Ken Salazar, Colorado

With 44 Dems in the Senate, and 41 needed to filibuster, it seems obvious that at least 4 of the above are planning to vote for Alito. These are the people we need to be talking to. With the media reporting that Senate Democratic staffers tell them a filibuster is "unlikely", it's because they are aware of the number of Democrats that won't commit to filibuster. Byrd, for example, is so afraid of the "nuclear option" that he'll probably vote "yes" on Alito just to avoid that confrontation.

15. The right answer is
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 07:52 PM by ProudDad
I'm going to be buying property outside of the United States

'Cause this place is going to be a complete fascist police state!!!

I don't want to participate in that.

On EDIT:

To be more responsive in the context of the poll --

It wouldn't change my view of the Dems.

I have always believed and still believe that the Dems are, at heart, the other right wing of the business party. They will vote in Alito because he's a friend of corporate-capitalist interests. That ALWAYS trumps human and civil rights with the majority of both the Dems and the pukes.

17. The Democratic Party is not the problem - its just certain Democrats
Unfortunately, when it comes to this kind of vote, it only takes a few Dems to stop the show.

Although the vast majority of the 45 Democrats would support a filibuster, 5 or 6 of them are shaky. Because it takes 41 Dems to sustain a filibuster, those 5 or 6 hold all of the cards. If the Dem leadership counts heads and is certain that they don't have the votes for a filibuster, it would be foolish to mount one since losing a filibuster fight could be worse than not doing it at all since it would make the party appear even weaker than it is.

The important thing is for us to light a fire under the shaky Democrats to try to force them to do the right thing. If they don't, it's not the fault of the party, but of these few Dems - and their constituents need to make them pay the price!

18. Dems vote NO and Alito is a supreme court justice
Dems fillibuster and Alito is a supreme court justice

The moderate republicans have to reject Alito and that sure isn't happening.

20. I believe they are trying to figure out a way to do it.
But - unless the can get some moderate repugs on their side, it won't happen.

What I do expect for the dems is a unified message on Alito. If they don't do that, than I will be very very very very disappointed.

21. I don't think they should fillibuster
Not that I like Alito, but the Republican senators in the 90's not only didn't fillibuster Clinton's nominees, but actually voted yes for them in pretty high numbers. I'm not saying the Democrats should vote yes, but I think they should let the nominee go through just so Americans can truly see what a mistake it was to vote Bush back into office.
