If Trent Lott retires, Does Rep. Gene Taylor (D-MS) have a shot...
He was great during the Katrina hearings and is conservative enough to carry the state. Anyone agree?

Lott is making an announcement Tuesday.

1. I read here on DU that Lott decided to run.
My question is, even if he runs, why can't a Dem win? Lott still has the black mark of losing his leadership spot, and the other Pubs are sure helping bring corruption to the whole party!

4. Lott would be hard to beat, especially since he's from the Coast
The Coast is one of the most populous parts of Mississippi (I think it's the most), and Democrats can win the Coast, usually. Since Lott is from the Coast, he cuts in to a region that a Democrat would expect to build his base in. Taylor and Moore are also from the Coast, but Lott, as the incumbent and a rather popular local figure, would still take the Coast, thus eroding a big chunk of the votes a Dem would need to win.

I think, anyway. I haven't lived there in a long time. I guess another Coastie running against him could split the Coast, and maybe pick up the Delta and the other Democratic regions, so it could work in reverse. I'd rather see Mike Moore run than Taylor, because if Taylor lost, we'd lose a strong voice in the House.

Plus, Lott has been a bit critical of Bush and the federal response to Katrina, and I think Coasties would be displeases to see them run against each other, rather than working together for the region.

Just my thoughts. I'm probably wrong, I usually am. :-)

2. Taylor should run against Lott NO MATTER what lott decides - >
every republican should have a democratic opponent no matter who the republican is or how friendly he/she
is to our interests.

3. I would love to see Taylor as senator, but rumor is that Mike Moore
plans to run, and since he's from the Coast as well, and has won statewide elections before (AG), I don't know that Taylor would run against him.

However, Cochran's term is up in 2008, and he'll be his 71. He may retire. How does Senator Taylor and Senator Moore sound?
