NEW NICKEL SHOWS JEFFERSON SMILING
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 12:28 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
I believe this latest effort in propaganda will backfire, as ALL Americans wonder what Jefferson has to smile about these days.

Certainly, he isn't smiling about the loss of the 4th Amendment, as it disappears from our Bill of Rights. Perhaps he smiles because the 5th and 6th Amendments remain almost intact, in spite of actions by the current administration, which threaten them.

He can't be smiling as we allow our leaders to erode the separation of church and state, a basic premise of the whole Constitution.

Maybe Jefferson smiles now because some of his predictions have come true and it's time for another Revolution. He said we needed Revolutions regularly to protect freedom.

No, I think he smiles as he looks down from that great government in the sky and sees that there are still a few real patriots in America to protect his ideals. Are you one of them? Do you just write about problems or are you actively trying to solve them? Jefferson did far more than simply write about Democracy. What have you done today to leave Jefferson's legacy of freedom to your children?

4. I'm sorry they brought Monticello back
They tried to change the reverse a few years ago and Virginia's congressmen about had a heart attack. They apparently think Virginia has exclusive rights to the nickel.

I would have preferred to see the bison remain.

25. The Monticello design was weak.
From an engineering standpoint. The mints have had problems stamping that damn thing on nickels properly for nearly 70 years. They should have either brought back the buffalo (the pre-1938 buffalo), or come up with something new, even if it was just a wreath and the numeral 5.

12. most online sources claim that is the only painting of Jefferson...
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 04:02 AM by Jeffersons Ghost
featuring a subtle smile but that's not the point of my post.. Look at the timing of this new nickel. Isn't it a great little feel-good patriotic icon, just when Der Fuhrer and his henchmen need it the most?

to see what i mean enter "jefferson smiles" into a search engine.

16. What the Hell? I though these jerks called themselves "Conservatives."
Why the HELL don't they leave the Damn Nickels alone? :wtf:

Work on fixing the things that NEED fixing, Like the $500,000,000,000.00 budget deficit, or the $8,000,000,000,000.00 National Debt? Or even the all those people who's homes were destroyed by Katrina?

They really must think we are all stupid and easily entertained by small shiny objects!

You hit the nail on the head. They DO think we as a people (dem/repuke all races sexual orientations and religions) ARE that dumb. The deeper issue I'm considering is; Are we?

18. collectors...big profit for government
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 07:16 PM by onenote
In case you haven't noticed millions of Americans collect coins as a hobby. (I'm guessing you don't approve, but maybe I'm wrong). The government has figured out that (a) they can use coinage to teach about history -- in this case the Louisiana purchase) and (b) make a profit (in this case, estimated to be more than $100 million).

Not sure what's to criticize, but I'm sure someone will tell me.

on edit: By the way, its not a "conservative" issue. THe legislation authorizing the commemorative nickel design program passed the House 412-5 or something like that. And was approved by voice vote in the Senate.

19. I do collect coins, have since I was very young.
That probably one of the reasons this pisses me off so much, their are much bigger issues "the Government" should be spending our Tax Dollars on right now. Besides, making 500,000,000 Nickels; these will never be worth much.

23. How is this going to make profits for the Government? Proof sets?
If this nickel is only for one year, which I pray this it will be, it's just going to end up in the 2006 State Quarters Proof set. They may produce a few thousand Jefferson Nickel Proof sets, but how many do you really think they would sell?

This is a huge waste of money.

This must be a political favor for someone at the "Franklin Mint" or

The Marshal Islands!

Humm, maybe Abrimoff is involved with this too? Don't they sometimes issue Proof Sets?

24. a variety of ways
Sales of collectors sets is only one way. When coins are taken out of circulation, the government effectively profits. Individuals, as well as entrepeneurs who re-sell sets of coins, increase the demand for nickels. In addition, there are licensing arrangements etc. The 50-state quarter program has been huge for the mint in terms of profits. Because nickels have a smaller "margin" (i.e., the difference between the cost of producing a nickel and a nickel is less than the difference between the cost of quarter and a quarter), the profits from the nickel program are less, but the fact is that the program not only pays for itself, but produces revenues in excess of the revenues that would have resulted otherwise.
