Petrodollar Warfare: Dollars, Euros and the Upcoming Iranian Oil Bourse

By William Clark

“This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous...Having said that, all options are on the table.”
– President George W. Bush, February 2005

Contemporary warfare has traditionally involved underlying conflicts regarding economics and resources. Today these intertwined conflicts also involve international currencies, and thus increased complexity. Current geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran extend beyond the publicly stated concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear intentions, and likely include a proposed Iranian “petroeuro” system for oil trade.

Similar to the Iraq war, military operations against Iran relate to the macroeconomics of ‘petrodollar recycling’ and the unpublicized but real challenge to U.S. dollar supremacy from the euro as an alternative oil transaction currency.

It is now obvious the invasion of Iraq had less to do with any threat from Saddam’s long-gone WMD program and certainly less to do to do with fighting International terrorism than it has to do with gaining strategic control over Iraq’s hydrocarbon reserves and in doing so maintain the U.S. dollar as the monopoly currency for the critical international oil market. Throughout 2004 information provided by former administration insiders revealed the Bush/Cheney administration entered into office with the intention of toppling Saddam Hussein.<1><2>

Candidly stated, ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’ was a war designed to install a pro-U.S. government in Iraq, establish multiple U.S military bases before the onset of global Peak Oil, and to reconvert Iraq back to petrodollars while hoping to thwart further OPEC momentum towards the euro as an alternative oil transaction currency (i.e. “petroeuro”).<3> However, subsequent geopolitical events have exposed neoconservative strategy as fundamentally flawed, with Iran moving towards a petroeuro system for international oil trades, while Russia evaluates this option with the European Union.

In 2003 the global community witnessed a combination of petrodollar warfare and oil depletion warfare. The majority of the world’s governments – especially the E.U., Russia and China – were not amused – and neither are the U.S. soldiers who are currently stationed inside a hostile Iraq. In 2002 I wrote an award-winning online essay that asserted Saddam Hussein sealed his fate when he announced in September 2000 that Iraq was no longer going to accept dollars for oil being sold under the UN’s Oil-for-Food program, and decided to switch to the euro as Iraq’s oil export currency.<4>

Indeed, my original pre-war hypothesis was validated in a Financial Times article dated June 5, 2003, which confirmed Iraqi oil sales returning to the international markets were once again denominated in U.S. dollars – not euros.

1. mmmmmm ... yeah.
The same thing has been bothering me. Lots of yak about Iran's nuclear potential, but I wonder if it all just comes down to this, sinvr apparently Iraq was making similar noises right before we invaded (not about starting their own bourse, but about trading in euros.)

Some economists seem to think this is significant; others disagree. Wish I could sit down for a while with one I know and trust...

2. This has always made sense to me.............
the entire, "war on terra", the "gassed his own people", the "fight them there so we don't have to fight them here" bullshit doesn't fly with me. It's not flying with about 60% of the population now either but they haven't connected all the dots yet.

9/11.......LIHOP, MIHOP.......it all fits together with what we're witnessing right now.

3. I had an "Epiphany MOMENT" over this about 3:00 p.m. today...It MAKES
SENSE...all the crap and misery we DU'ers (who've been at this since Clinton Impeachment, through the rest) what is it was for "PETRO DOLLARS?

It's the ONLY THING that makes sense of Stolen Elections, Election Fraud and why our Dems seem to us to be wimps. All the time we've spent on the Media...all the effort "getting out the vote."

In the end...none of it made sense. We couldn't understand HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN...particularly We DU'er's who are Older and have been through much Political life from JFK (John Kennedy...not JF Kerry) and we still couldn't understand why our Democracy was SO FRAGILE all of a sudden.

It's never been about what the Politico's, Pundits, Media, Corporatists or everyone has been telling us...we've been FIGHTING STRAW DOGS...SMOKE AND MIRRORS...

WHAT IF? It's ALL ABOUT "Petro Dollars." It kind of ties into the worries of environmentalists and the very radical Left...doesn't it.

A Grand Worldwide CHESSBOARD ...and the "people" are the Pawns...because the Think Tanks and World Globalists are trying to work out WHO will WIN...and they didn't bother to tell us...figuring we wouldn't go along if we KNEW the END GAME they were trying to achieve.

 At least this makes more sense to me than all the hell we've lived through and the questions we keep throwing back at our Dem selves.

It was all PLANNED...and we just weren't "clued in."

4. I've said this before
Why did they not just lay the actual reasons on the line before we went to war. The administration thinks that people respond only to the "threat on their life" BS that they spewed at us, but the reality is people respond much faster to their pocketbooks actually being assaulted than they do to perceived threats that are based on transparent lies.

Most people of even little education understand that wars are fought for two purposes,

1)World Domination
2)To protect the resources and interests of the body politic and the people (in that order).

Right now we are fighting a war that the people, on all sides, see as one of world domination. While this is partially true, the defense of the dollar as valid petroleum currency is ESSENTIAL to the stabilization of our economy and (more importantly) My ability to get to work every morning and still feed my family!

Economic world domination aside, we need to be sure that the US can still buy oil with our currency at a rate which is conducive to gas prices that everyone can afford. We are getting closer to that not being the case every day.

I still think that there are solutions other than war (independent dollar based western hemisphere oil consortium, alternative fuels, electric cars, etc) and I still hate the war, but I wish that they would just come clean instead of feeding us all this subterfuge. Especially when one of those elements of subterfuge cost 3,000 American civilian lives (LIHOP or MIHOP, either way there is no doubt any longer that one of them is true).

6. I know...but the Repugs never want Diplomacy...and even if our Dems
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 09:12 PM by KoKo01
knew all of this back to Carter...they still "tried" to use DIPLOMACY. It's the Repugs who want WAR to settle it. We can see from everything they've done they HATE Diplomacy. But that this "dance" between Repugs and Dems has been going on over Oil for decades and we THE PEOPLE have been only shown "Smoke and Mirrors" and "Dog and Pony Shows" for our Elections...SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD THE TRUTH OF IT!

But...THINK TANKS think we are Stupid...the "Masses" like some kind of thory from the 1930's by those who allowed the rise of the Nazi's and caused WWII.

Whenever the people are engaged though...the theory by the Elite Governing is that "they wont understand...it will take too long to convince them..feed them bread and wine...etc."

In the end the PEOPLE always rise...but they also tear down what they see as "tyranny."

If only Kings and Princes and Politico's of so-called Democracies would just TELL THE TRUTH...and not use "Bread & Circuses" for distraction.

15. That's for sure
<snip>
they wont understand...it will take too long to convince them..feed them bread and wine...etc."
<snip>

Only here its Heroin, Crack and MaryJane (may be illegal, still what keeps the masses engaged in something else)

These are the reasons why it is time for new political ideas and a new movement. I have been building a following in the northwest and we have 5 and 10 year plans, just need people (and we know they are out there).

I just need to get the web site going and we are on...

5. I agree.
I saw an article by an arab economist who laid it all out.

It made sense.

So, if that's true, the real crime that Iran's perpetrating right now is the planned Oil Bourse.

I still don't see where Amadinejad fits in here, though.

He's practically BEGGING for it.

10. It isn't just that he is saying these things
It is that the media is playing it up repeatedly. Same thing for Chavez. Notice how every little hiccup of his is in the media, taken out of context and framed as threatening or deranged? This is to develop a subconscious meme in USAsians that Chavez is dangerous. Inevitable "we will have to deal with that crazy Chavez." He has no nukes but has oil. I think his giving poor Americans fuel is an attempt to counter this implanted image and poke at Bush, too.

They're SO inflammatory, even those with no love for Israel are condemning him, including almost the enitre Arab world.

Although.

That might be the script.

13. Crazy yes

It may be scripted taunting... didn't N. Korea's leader do this too?

It's debatable what danger if any N. Korea is unless we threaten (or Bush's God forbid attack) them. There is a cat and mouse game to some extent to obtain some less obvious goal. But, it is a fact that Bush focuses on them that gets big news play here.

Crazy statements are not the norm, but not new. Nuclear warfare has not been the end result of any of it. Well not until Bush came along and made preemptive attack the best and preferred method without going on anymore than his gut notion.

Europe is concerned but not panicking and neither should the U.S. at this time. I doubt Iran is bent on self-destruction and there is much opportunity to work something out other than a End Times solution. An attack on Iran would really be a world-wide cataclysm.

8. For more on Petro Dollars
Get thee to a library and check out William Engdahl's A Century Of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order, which demonstrates the link between everything from the British depression in the late 1800s, Gallipoli, the founding of Israel, the Iranian revolution, and the overthrow of myriad elected governments.

12. Thanks for the info...it's something we probably all need to look into
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 11:25 PM by KoKo01
there's got to be more of a plan that what the Media is feeding us ...because as crazy as they are...they have an awful big group of "old time Goverment" politicos backing them.

That they wont stand up for THE PEOPLE means in their Think Tank way...they THINK they are or it's so out of control they don't care anymore and we are irrelevant.

Remember that old saying from Watergate investigation: "Follow the Money."

It would see it could apply to this...a huge worldwide effort to control the flow of money and oil and the arms that go with it all to intimidate each other for who will control it all or a big enough piece of it, anyway.

9. This is the only thing that has made sense to me to explain all
the hell we've lived through on this Board since 2000 and for those of us before watching Clinton fall.

I don't know if I'm off the beam here or not...but I think it's something those of us who are seriously not understanding how we can be living through a surreal American Experience can hold onto our sanity and move forward making preparations for our families.

All of our angst and "push back" and not making a difference with our Dem Leadership makes more sense when one stands back and takes a "pragmatic view" that what's at stake is bigger than what they want us to know.

The worst to me is growing up in a "Believing in American Goodness Culture" that our Government could be so crass. But, it's the only answer that has really made sense to me out of all of this we've been through.

I don't know...but it's believable to me...that we've been "Think Tanked" into what we are today. And that there are those who think they know better than the PEOPLE...and they are willing to sacrifice their reputations and all of our Trillion dollar Debt to prove it. They are going for BROKE...on our backs...because they believe it's that Important.

I don't think they are correct...because of my reading of HISTORY and EMPIRE!...but then...I don't have a PhD to back me up...but lots of "horse sense" and experience. I wonder if that can count for much these days.

16. Well, yes. Iran announced they were switching their currency in April, 06
Iraq did the same thing and the war drums got very much louder immediately after and we were at war before the date of the switch.
