What would you have added to Gore's speech?
I can understand him not bringing up the "impeachment" word. His speech was about following the law. The law would require an investigation before an impeachment and he did call for an independent investigator. Will the Democratic Party get behind him?

Otherwise, I think he covered about all the bases...

1. I would have...
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 02:23 PM by C_U_L8R
put the Seal of the President on his podium
Al is a great American and a brave hero.

To your point on impeachment... I think it is
better to concentrate on the crimes that Bush
has committed (as Al did so well) ... if the whole
country is talking about that... then the rest is academic.

5. I think impeachment could have been broached...
just by saying "If the president did X, then he should be removed from office."

At the same time, I can understand not bringing it up, since that would result in him being dismissed -- after all, no serious commentators are talking about impeachment. Right? :eyes:

7. agreed. made me weep thinking how long its been since anyone in the
white house could string meaningful sentences together that didn't appeal the lowest base levels of human depravity.
Instead, it was appealing to the highest levels of human potential.

a more marked contrast is not possible.

10. Wouldn't add a thing
Except maybe me in the audience.

He was brilliant!

We've often heard references to the Founders, and how and why they framed the Constitution the way they did, but the way he tied it all together in that speech really was inspired and inspiring.

The last line in the speech, from MLK I believe?, about the 'dark which seems so close around us' actually brought a tear to my eye.

The BEST moment was when he called out the Congressional Dems, and admonished them to defend the Constitution, as their duty requires of them.

WooHoo!! Go Al!!

11. We don't have a real leader. I want him.
He doesn't have to say the "I" word. It is coming.

We do have to have a leader. He is bold, smart and has been there before.

He is a leader. I'd follow him (even over General Clark). The only thing, I guess I want unreasonably, is that he'd convey he will lead (to those with an 8th grade education).

I think he may very well be the guy. Kind of fitting, since he was the true president elected in 2000.

12. election reform
Putting the voting technology back in the hands of non partisans with "Voter Verified Paper Ballots."

Other than that, consider demanding immediate resignation of this criminal cabal and nothing less.

A greatly encouraging full page ad appeared in the much besmirched "Blue Lady" sponsored by the most "unpatriotic" ACLU a while ago. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/12/29/05855/837

Have a nice day.

19. Despite the fact that election reform should be at the top of the list,
you can surely imagine that they would jump on Gore with both feet first if he had brought it up in this speech. The rest of the speech would have been buried, and they would have spun it into a "sour grapes" rant, which they will still try to do, I'm sure.

13. I have decided, in light of the major issues confronting America Today,
that the best way to remedy the damage done by the past six years of the Bush administration, is to run for President in 2008. By that time, we will have shifted the balance in the Senate to Democratic, have had 2 years to begin the process of righting our course into the correct direction and by the time I step in as President in 2008, the country will be ready for the new and very improved leadership I will bring to the table.

A goddamn MUZZLE.

Jesus. We should be scouring the internets for anybody who has said the same thing Gore said and bombarding the media and Congress with it, create a HERD. Instead, we're repeating the right's talking points for them, and once again, "critiquing" our own.

Aaaargh.

30. Nothing! He even mentioned Alito and "nuclear option" to end fillibuster
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 10:46 PM by Wordie
The President's judicial appointments are clearly designed to ensure that the courts will not serve as an effective check on executive power. As we have all learned, Judge Alito is a longtime supporter of a powerful executive - a supporter of the so-called unitary executive, which is more properly called the unilateral executive. Whether you support his confirmation or not - and I do not - we must all agree that he will not vote as an effective check on the expansion of executive power. Likewise, Chief Justice Roberts has made plain his deference to the expansion of executive power through his support of judicial deference to executive agency rulemaking.

And the Administration has supported the assault on judicial independence that has been conducted largely in Congress. That assault includes a threat by the Republican majority in the Senate to permanently change the rules to eliminate the right of the minority to engage in extended debate of the President's judicial nominees. The assault has extended to legislative efforts to curtail the jurisdiction of courts in matters ranging from habeas corpus to the pledge of allegiance. In short, the Administration has demonstrated its contempt for the judicial role and sought to evade judicial review of its actions at every turn.
