My report from Constitution Hall
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 04:44 PM by MountainLaurel
One of the perks of living in Washington is the ability, when one isn't busy down in the salt mines trying to keep the cat in kibble, to go to all sorts of incredible events, often free. And sometimes, you get to participate in history. I've been at some of the largest protest marches since the Vietnam War and carried signs along with hundreds of thousands of others in honor of women's health. Today was another one of those days.

By now most of you have probably read the transcripts of the speech and thus you know the content, as well as the early reactions of the opposition. But I wanted to throw in a few comments of my own, from the perspective of one who was there.

By the time we got downtown around 11:25, parking was already scarce in the blocks nearest CH despite today being a federal holiday. (And my husband has the golden touch with parking, so if it was there, he would have sniffed it out.) As we got within about three or four blocks, you could see the groups of people walking toward the hall. You could tell who was going to the speech, because they all had the printout of their ticket reservation waving from their hands. We ended up about 8 or 9 blocks away, ironically, across from the State Department.

Just as it's been at every march I've been to in DC, the crowd spanned the ranges of age, color, and income. There were elderly men in suits, college students in their woolies, and older children with their parents. By the time we got there, most of the seats on the floor were taken, but we found two seats in the back row on the left. About half of the seats in the balcony area were taken. Just before noon, someone began passing around photocopies signs that read "Impeach Bush and Cheney." Everything started on time, with the leader from the American Constitutional Society speaking. After sending a shout-out to Tipper Gore in the audience, she gave a strong summary of the situation we face today in terms of assaults on the Constitution. There was a large screen on the stage above the speaker's podium, and a total of 10 American flags.

Then there was the issue with Bob Barr. While the first woman was speaking, an assistant handed her a piece of paper. She stopped for a second to read it, and then continued. She concluded her speech and explained that Barr would be "with us" in a second; by the way she kept looking up at the screen and by the fact that there were only two chairs on stage, we figured he would be on a live feed from somewhere. While we were waiting, we heard a few people shout things, and others laugh and applaud. There was a tension in the air as we waited for the main event, and perhaps some worries that the crowd might get unruly. The only one I caught was the final one, when someone shouted "Impeach Bush." It was just after that that an unknown man stepped up on the stage to go ahead and introduce Gore.

Then, Gore came to speak. He must have fine natural projection vocally, because the volume that had been just fine with the other speakers now became almost too loud. You could tell he had a righteous conviction behind his words: It was powerful. After a few minutes, I looked over at my husband to see tears streaming down his face, perhaps at finally hearing someone in politics with the courage to call a spade a spade and to say the things we've known for five years. It wasn't the last time. I was just amazed at hearing a natural orator at work. No mispronounciations or words that do not exist. Everything he mentioned was backed up with facts, including the MLK/COINTELPRO information, the pressure on CIA staff about the Iraq-al Qaeda link, and the suppresion of scientists and other experts. Again, the power of Gore's convictions drove the speech, and he was interrupted many times with standing ovations and applause. In most cases, he spoke over it. Throughout the speech, you could see people nodding vigorously as he spoke. During the last few minutes, people were on their feet much of the time, particularly has he laid out his five points. A few people raised their impeachment signs, but overall the crowd was respectful but enthusiastic.

Afterward, as we walked back to the car, we heard people around us who had also been at the speech talking about the same things we were: whether or not the mainstream media would pay attention, the call-out to Congressional leaders on both sides of the aise, the call to the American people to take back their country.

All in all, wow.

And for going to the event! I watched via CSPAN, and it was very inspiring.

It's such a relief just to hear the truth from a national leader.

And it made me nostalgic, both for our democracy, and the days when our leaders could SPEAK.

and that includes many Repubs who are realizing that the corrupt Bush cabal is lying and does not represent the traditional goals of the GOP and has done great damage to our country and the world.

44. Honestly...
I know more Republican whom vote as such "locally." On a national-scale, this state (Md) votes Democrat, cross the board.

From one county to the next and all places in between countless folks have expressed their major disgust with *&Co, since way back when...
What really ticks them off is the Dems aren't fighting this corrupt bunch of GOP congress critters & adm enough. This is their words, not mine, mind you.

How I know they're voting habits? They tell me, in a apologetic manner. They're ticked. I know. If Dems would make major stands, and say it like it is, I'm certain many disgruntled and pretty angry Rep voters would gladly vote Democrat, but they see no spine, no one speaking for them, either.

So, when I see that photo I believe it. Because I know plenty that look just like that man, except the many I've met & know would look angrier.

20. Questions for you...
Did you feel that it was sabotage that Bob Barr's "feed" was lost. Did you feel you were going to see him appear live? Was the "loud speaker" problem fixed during Gore's speech or was it still turned up to a loud volume that wasn't consistent with the other speakers.

And...did you and your husband feel good that you heard someone "NORMAL" speaking and it just lit up your life after years of the garbled, mangled, war rhetoric of the Chimp.

So, in summary: Did you feel Gore was sabotauged by Barr not showing up or only committing to have a Sattelite feed; did the wait cause you to feel anxious that Gore might "lose it" and was the "volume" possibly manipulated to turn folks off his speech (did it turn down into his speech?) and did you walk out of there finally feeling that you "WERE NOT ALONE" anymore, here on the "internets?"

Just so you know...I thought it was a speech that will go down in HISTORY BOOKS as one of the most important given in American History.

21. Let's see
No, we didn't think Barr would show up in person: There were only two chairs on the stage, and Gore was sitting in one and the woman from ACS in the other. I'm not sure if that was the plan all along: My husband got the tickets, so I didn't see the original email from MoveOn that alerted him about it. Gore seemed to handle the delay in stride and wasn't shaken in the least. We weren't concerned about him "losing it" at all.

Regarding the volume, I can't be sure whether it was turned down somewhat after the speech had started or if I just got used to it. Whoever they used to test the volume must have had a much naturally softer voice. It didn't seem to turn anyone off the speech at all.

As for the walking out of there feeling, I think there was a sense of validation that someone was willing to come out and speak the truth in a public forum, for all to hear. There have been rumblings about the torture, the spying, the backlash against anyone inside the government who dares to speak out. Plus, he did it so eloquently, tying together the excesses of the Hoover era FBI against MLK Jr. with what's happening today, while painting a picture of what the future might look like if the system of checks and balances isn't put back into balance.

.....and WOW is right!! I can only imagine what it must have been like in person. Imagine how much differently this country and the world would be if SCOTUS hadn't been co-conspirators in the Right-wing Bush coup in 2000.

The winner would be actually running the country. Instead we find out that the term "loser" has so many different meanings for just ONE man!!

Here's something I posted here yesterday in response to someone's question about Bob Barr:

As the woman who gave the opening remarks was speaking, someone came out and gave her a note and then whispered in Gore's ear. When the woman finished, she said Barr was going to introduce Gore (which sent something of a chuckle throughout the audience, but then turned into polite applause) and then she sat down beside Gore. Everyone sat looking at the screen waiting for Barr to appear...the woman said (I was near the front, so I could hear her) that it would be a minute before Barr was linked, but it never happened.

Everyone began murmuring and, after the woman went backstage, someone called out something about Gore either being president or running for president (I couldn't tell which). Gore smiled appreciatively and then someone else yelled: "Oh eight!" to which Gore wagged his finger and shook his head no.

Still no Barr. Just as Gore was comically looking around to see if someone was going to introduce him, the woman came out and got the director of one of the sponsoring organizations to come up from the audience and introduce Gore.

All in all, a good speech. People were very energized when they left, and I'm hoping the Democrats or someone will be able to harness that energy and do something constructive with it (aside from using it as "hot button" fundraising issue).

43. You're going to LOVE DU!!
The only problem is, its very addictive! One can lose all track of time exploring the many forums DU has to offer. Once you get your official gold star, you will be able to 'go' many more places and 'meet' many more posters with similar interests to yours! There are so many special interest forums that DU offers, and you can participate in, with your gold star. Oh, the places you will go....

Great having you here! :bounce:

I just watched the ENTIRE Gore speech, and was completely overwhelmed. First, it was so refreshing to hear someone so well-spoken, and someone who was able to enunciate. Second, and most important, the content was brilliant. I still have to have time to fully digest everything he talked about, and probably will watch it again, just to let it 'sink in'.

Scotty McClellan is on CSPAN-1 now, and was just being asked about what Gore said in his speech yesterday. Specifically, the ascendency of the executive branch at the expense of the legislative branch. Scotty answered repeatedly that Shrub would do everything in his 'lawful power' to keep America safe from the terrorists that hit us on 9-11. They keep resorting to 9-11 as a means of purportedly shoring up their base. :puke: (of course he didn't answer the question at all, except to reiterate that 'if the Democrats want Gore as their spokesperson on this issue, we would welcome that')

47. Re: You're going to love DU
I can't believe how much stuff DU has! I never knew and I keep getting lost...lol.

I had tears in my eyes for alot of the speech. Particularly after some of his statements but mostly it was a sad wishful thinking, if only, pondering.
How things would be so much different if he had become president. Of course, we wouldn't appreciate him so much if he had because we'd have no idea what would have become of us or this country under Bush.

My two most favorite topics is when he offered, 'are we more in danger now than when thousands of nukes were pointed at us in the sixties', etc.,calling into question the fear and intimidation that Bush is using to scare some into following him.
And when he softly yet firmly, almost a low growl, called upon Congress to uphold the Constitution of the US instead of kowtowing to this administration.

I've watched it three times. (Mainly to fact check the accuracy of what others have said he said...lol...it's, INsistently not PERsistently dammit!):)

Off to bed.
Great Wednesday to you.

48. Yep, there's a LOT about DU to love!!
I worked for Gore's campaign in 2000, and was devastated with the outcome. Listening to him today, I too, was saddened by what 'might have been'. However, I was brightened by the hope that perhaps it still could be in 2008. Maybe others, listening to him yesterday, were also moved by hearing the truth from such a powerful speaker with traceable thought patterns (unlike the imbecile we now have). Moved to doing something about the situation at hand, and moved to let him know we would like him to run in '08.

Enjoy DU, you'll meet LOTS of great people here!!

I was off yesterday, and thanks in large part to DU, was made aware that I should turn on my TV to catch Gore's speech. I missed the very first part, but watched and listened to the rest. It was an incredible speech, and his conviction shone through. He is right, it's not just the Republicans who are at fault for where we are today. The Democrats have gone along to get along, too. They have forgotten or willingly have abdicated their role as an equal power, along with the executive branch. We need more people like Al Gore, and I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his continued dedication to fighting for this country.
