Glen Beck says that it was okay for Jefferson to have sex with his slaves
Because back then, black people were treated the same way we treat furniture nowadays. ???? :wtf:

Beck was going on and on about MLK Jr., and how great black people have it in America, and how the poor white man is being discriminated against all the time, and this gem pops out. It's bad enough that he uses Martin Luther King Day to rant about the "plight of the white man", but to try to justify what amounts to what I consider to be rape because "that's just the way it was back then" is absolutely ridiculous.

Glen Beck is a racist fucking pig.

3. Beck is a bible-thumping Rush Limbaugh
I was working in a client's office that listens to this shit. Limbaugh in the AM, Beck in the afternoon, and Michael "Savage" Weiner in the PM. The guy (my client) is a total wack job.

After listening to him today, it doesn't surprise me one bit.

Unfortunately, the yokels around here eat this shit up.

The two talk radio stations in town play:

Limbaugh->Beck->Drudge/(whoever else is playing)->Art Bell
Laura Ingram->Hannity->Savage Weiner->O'Reilly replays

17. Yep, here's a link to Media Matters

"Radio host Glenn Beck "thinking about killing Michael Moore"

Clear Channel radio host Glenn Beck said he was "thinking about killing Michael Moore" and pondered whether "I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it," before concluding: "No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong?"

From the May 17 broadcast of The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: Hang on, let me just tell you what I'm thinking. I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong? I stopped wearing my What Would Jesus -- band -- Do, and I've lost all sense of right and wrong now. I used to be able to say, "Yeah, I'd kill Michael Moore," and then I'd see the little band: What Would Jesus Do? And then I'd realize, "Oh, you wouldn't kill Michael Moore. Or at least you wouldn't choke him to death." And you know, well, I'm not sure.

Beck's program is syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks (owned by radio conglomerate Clear Channel Communications) on more than 160 radio stations across the country to an estimated audience of 6 million listeners. He has previously falsely accused Moore of "taking help and money from Hezbollah" and called Michael Berg, who criticized the Bush administration after his son Nick was beheaded in Iraq, "despicable" and "a scumbag."

28. He met and married a liberal gal who helped turn him.
I believe the first issue that got under his skin was the plight of the veterans who weren't getting enough benefits. He used to be a right wing radio guy. Now he's a progressive radio guy. He's sort of a left-leaning Rush Limbaugh type. He seems to be something of a Hillary fan. He talks about hunting and fishing, and sports as well as progressive issues. He was strong when he talked about Soc. Security, and he supported Cindy Sheehan, but he kind of blasted Dean, and is somewhat to centrist for some people.

I think he identifies his defining moment in the switch as having come around 2001.

Here's his website: www.wegoted.com

It only takes a split second to stream either Air America or Big Eddie Schultz..

http://www.airamericaradio.com/

http://www.bigeddieradio.com/

You seriously need to tune out that rightwing B.S. and listen to something decent !!!

What's a matter with Boise-freaken-Idaho anyway???? There's tons of red states with both Air America and the Jones Radio Network (Big Eddie and Stephanie Miller)

I'm not sure about all of the programs.. but I know that on Big Ed you can listen to clips of the programs on the archives page at his site.

Dayum --- tune that crap out --- it's BAD for you (and your client !!!)

35. I spend most of my time away from a computer
At least a computer that I can tune into a stream. I occasionally catch some Air America, but when I'm working at a client's place of business (I'm a private software consultant), I listen to whatever the employees have on. Usually a music station, but a lot of people listen to conservative radio here. I tend to tune it out, but Glen Beck caught my attention because his statements were so outrageous. There's definitely no way I'm going to ask people to change their radio stations - being an outed liberal is bad for business in Boise-freaken-Idaho. :-)

The only other times I listen to the radio, I'm in my car, and I listen to the sports talk stations. I'll be getting XM radio soon, so that will help.

15. Are We Taking It Out Of Context?
Is it possible Beck said something more like back then it was considered OK for Jefferson to have sex with slaves so we shouldn't judge him by today's standards? We look at that now and say that is rape, but they didn't see it that way then. Two hundred years ago a man was considered progressive if he "let" his slaves learn to read and liberated them upon his death. Moral relativism - heck yes. But then, I recognize the importance of societal standards which change over time.

Perhaps in two hundred years Americans will have moved beyond consuming any animal products in any manner whatever. How would you like to think that in 2206 our descendents will look back on us and say what monsters and savages we were for eating meat? That may be an inflammatory analogy, but I have heard some animal rights activists compare their fight to that of abolitionists (although, not in so those words).

On the other hand, it is hard not to get so annoyed any time I hear people bitching about the plight of the white man. I remind myself that not all people spouting this white man as victim b.s. are racist, some of them are just fools. They really believe that since there are no laws *today* codifying discrimination that it doesn't exist - that hundreds of years of such laws are meaningless. Stupid.

21. Taken that way, slavery was okay
back then because judged by the standards of the day, it was normal. Should we justify the crusades because they took place in another time and place that is very different from what we see now? The same goes for Hitler's atrocities - should we not judge them simply because they took place 3 generations ago? I understand what you're saying, but there are some things that are bad, whether taken in the context of their age or not.

Taking advantage of a person who is "owned" by another for sex is rape in my book, and is bad in any context.

Oh, and Glen Beck is definitely a racist asshole. Whether his racism has its foundational base in foolishness or naivety or ignorance, it is still racism.

30. Of Course Slavery Was Evil
but that doesn't mean all slaveholders were wicked. Of course what Hitler and the Nazis did was atrocious, but not all Germans were bad people.

For that matter, what about Senator Byrd? He was in the KKK! While that was in his "younth" - he was in his mid forties when he joined a filibuster of the Civil Rights Act. Fortunately, he has seen the error of his ways, but do you think he was a bad person or simply a naive one who didn't think outside the narrow frame of his upbringing?

I don't think we should justify these people's actions, but when we "judge" them as good or bad people, we do need to have some sort of context and perspective. What Thomas Jefferson did was wrong, but as a person was he really evil?

I don't really like defending Glen Beck or racism, but I wanted to give another perspective on it.

32. WARNING: This thread look like RNC DIVIDEand CONQUER to me.
Bringing up the issue of Jefferson's slaves anytime Jefferson has been mentioned as an opponent of John Adams' violations of the Constitution (Alien and Sedition Act) as Al Gore did in today's speech is a FAVORITE ploy of the RNC and the Freepers. John Adams is a Saint of the Neo Cons who get erections thinking about the Alien and Sedition Act.

Slavery is bad.

Opposing violations of the Constitition is good.

Anyone trying to Divide and Conquer Democrats is the lowest of the low.

Underlying this remark, sits Jefferson with slaves as if that often distorted bit of history somehow ordains slavery. Plato teaches we are all slaves in a society where tyrants make laws they do not obey, while "just" individuals follow those laws.
