If you've been reading the papers, you know that some people are trying to make it look like no one cares and no one is fighting Samuel Alito's nomination. Monday's New York Times quoted Steve Schmidt, the White House point man for Alito saying, "The American people see Judge Alito and say, that's exactly the sort of person we want to see on the Supreme Court."

Are we going to let this White House spinmeister speak for us and what we care about?

If you want your voice heard and not more Washington doublespeak, we need you to speak up now - and tell the Senate that America can't afford Alito on the Supreme Court.

If there was ever any doubt that Alito's nomination is the most important showdown in a generation for those concerned with preserving the guarantees our Constitution provides to all Americans, Alito's testimony last week made it abundantly clear: If confirmed, Alito will likely roll back important gains made in protecting and advancing civil rights, vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, condone the abuse of power by the president, go too far in allowing government intrusion in your personal life and help curtail Congress' ability to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the American people. He will join the conservative Scalia/Thomas/Roberts wing of the Court.

The idea voiced by many of you was to try a unique petition angle to pressure the four Senators who call themselves “pro-choice Republicans” to vote NO on Samuel Alito. As with many of you, I am appalled that a “pro-choice Republican” could even consider voting in support of Samuel Alito. This is the same judge who wrote in a 1985 memo that “the Constitution does not protect the right to an abortion.”

Please help Lincoln Chafee remember the rights of the people who elected him from Rhode Island, where 63 percent of citizens are pro-choice and just 32 percent oppose choice. Put the heat on Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania where 51 percent are pro-choice and just 44 percent oppose choice. Remind Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe that 63 percent of people in Rhode Island are pro-choice and just 32 percent oppose choice.

But this is not the only issue. In the honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., former Vice President Al Gore eloquently addressed what can happen when the federal government abuses its power to secretly wiretap American citizens:

“And on this particular Martin Luther King Day, it is especially important to recall that for the last several years of his life, Dr. King was illegally wiretapped-one of hundreds of thousands of Americans whose private communications were intercepted by the U.S. government during that period.

The FBI privately labeled King the "most dangerous and effective Negro leader in the country" and vowed to "take him off his pedestal."”

states I live in. I called Nelson's office and his staffer (Eric) told me that for every call like mine, there were 20 calls for supporting Alito. More Nebraskans need to step up to the phone. When I called my senator in LA, Landriau(sp) and she "hasn't made up her mind"...I called my senator in Rhode Island today also, his line was busy busy busy. I called Harry Reid's office too and let him know that I encouraged a filibuster and suggested that he shut down the senate again and not let them open the doors until there are true hearings into the illegal activities in the wh.
