At GOP.com: new website tracking Sen Dems' positions on Alito vote
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 12:45 PM by Wordie
(Posted with a BIG thank you to tritsofme, who made this great find)
DU activists and letter writers please note! This is a GREAT place to get info on where the Senators stand. We all owe GOP.com a big debt of gratitude for doing so much legwork for us! :)

It is here: http://www.gop.com/DemocratsonAlito/

They analyze how dems are likely to vote, and suggest what Repubs should say to them to try to convince them to vote for Alito.

I also found this, from yesterday, at http://www.wnbc.com/politics/4954685/detail.html

The Alito Nomination

Today is the last day the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for a month, which means it's most likely Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's last day of oral arguments, as Alito is expected to be seated on the bench by the time oral arguments resume on February 21. NBC's Strickland reports that Alito will be back on the Hill today for more meetings with some Senate Democrats: Max Baucus, Ron Wyden, and Bill Nelson. Sen. Ben Nelson of red-state Nebraska, meanwhile, is the first Democrat to announce he'll vote to confirm Alito, and may meet with Alito today as well, Strickland reports.

This morning, the Republican National Committee will unveil a new website that tracks where Senate Democrats -- from Nelson to liberal Chuck Schumer -- stand on Alito's nomination.

With Senate Democrats meeting at 12 noon today to discuss how to handle Alito's nomination, the anti-Alito group Alliance for Justice yesterday sent out an e-mail to supporters urging them to call their Senators to tell them they oppose Alito. "He will join the conservative Scalia/Thomas/Roberts wing of the Court," the e-mail says. "This is about more than Alito's confirmation, it's about the future of the country. Don't let your senators get through another day without hearing from you."

Also, I watched PBS newshour last night and Reid was on. Reid, in a response to a question about whether dems will fillibuster said it was too early to know. He said that Dems have submitted a list of questions to Alito and they haven't gotten answers yet. And that the Dems want to take this seriously and make it a dignified process. He also expressed concerns about Alito.

1. We should thank the Repubs,
now we know which Dems are undecided and so who we need to call to tell to OPPOSE Scalito. Nice of them to make it so easy for us.

3. Did you see what they are suggesting Repubs should say?

"Tell Senator <senator's name> to stand with Alito, not Ted Kennedy and far-left attack groups.

Can you say "false dichotomy"?
Do they really think that message will sway them?

4. It probably depends on the Senator. It will probably work with some, I'm
afraid. Do they say that about all of them, or just some?

8. I haven't checked all of them

but it says that for every one I've clicked on. Except Ted Kennedy himself. That one just says "Tell Senator Kennedy to stand with Alito, not with the far-left attack groups."

Of course if, hypothetically speaking, Ted Kennedy was swayed by this plea and supported Alito then all of the other pleas would become contradictory. But I shouldn't expect logic from this bunch.

9. Apparently, the GOP is not as organized in this as it first appeared.
Good!

The Democrats that they show as "Undecided - Key Vote" are the ones we should flood with letters and emails!

5. That was handy, I'll have to work harder on Tom Carper
I figured Biden wouldn't be worth the effort because I knew without a doubt he would oppose Alito and probably support the filibuster!

6. Some other threads that might be helpful:

This looks to me like an unbelievably thorough analysis by DU poster orleans (Thanks, orleans!), here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=2368101

And I posted a thread where I tried to give people some info about the Gang of 14. (Not a popular thread - 1 response - but here's the link anyway, FWIW:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2377058

And don't forget this, "Stop Alito Resource thread..." in the Activist Corps Forum, by DU Activist Corps member bettyellen (Thanks bettyellen!): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=106x25890

And there's also this, by DU poster GrpCaptMandrake (Thanks, GrpCaptMandrake!), about how to approach Dem Senator Byrd, urging him to support a fillibuster. Sen. Byrd's support could be crucial, because of the respect other Dem Senators have for him, so we all should try to convince him.
