Senate Democrats propose Bible class for public schools

DOUG GROSS
Associated Press

ATLANTA - Georgia public school students would be allowed to study the Bible under a plan proposed by Democrats in the state Senate on Wednesday.

The bill authorizes the state school board to approve an optional course that would teach about the Bible's influence on literature, art, culture and politics.

"As a history major, I understand very clearly the impact the Bible has had on society," said Sen. Tim Golden, of Valdosta, chairman of the Senate's Democratic caucus and the bill's sponsor. "It's had a huge impact."

The bill would allow for "nonsectarian, nonreligious academic study" of the Bible and would require it "be taught in an objective and nondevotional manner with no attempt made to indoctrinate students as to either the truth or falsity of the biblical materials."

Opinions? I'm in a heated debate on a blog regarding this matter and would like to know what the people of Democratic Underground think?

2. Well, if they teach the Bible...
...in a "historical-only" context, then they'd better teach about the Talmud, the Koran, and all other religious texts as well. Otherwise, it would be discrimination.

5. This is pandering to the so-called Christians who have one agenda
Authorizing a separate Bible course is the stinker here. There is no way a course focusing on the Bible's influence on our culture will be nonsectarian. Referencing the biblical influences as part of a regular literature or art or history course is appropriate and can be done without using the Bible in the class room. Are the Georgia senators also proposing optional courses on the influence of Muslim or Jewish culture on our society? Didn't think so.

6. No, too obvious a sop -- a political move.
And it's certainly not a subject worthy of a whole class, at least not at the public school level.

I read a couple Bible stories as part of a World Lit class in 12th grade, and that was completely appropriate. But a whole class? No.
