2. Oooh! Can this be another Mark Warner win for the Dems?
I lived most of my life in Pa, and I never considered W Va a southern state, but lately, it's sure looking that way. Since Va. HAS been considered a southern state and Mark Warner has become a very popular Dem...maybe even the underdog candidate in 08, does this mean Joe Manchin could be the second one????

8. Virginia is becoming bluer, West Virginia is becoming redder
It's weired, since historically West Virginia was the more Democratic. They even voted for Dukakis while several of our now solid blue states, such as Vermont, were red. I bet by 2012 or 2016, VA will be a light blue state while West Virginia will be a solid red state.

9. Give them the right candidate and they'll vote BLUE.
West By God Virginia is doing better than a lot of other red states. At least they've elected a Democratic Governor and BOTH of their U.S. Senators are Democrats.

After the nation is finally rid of Bush and his filth, there's no telling how people EVEN IN WEST VIRGINIA will vote.

Given the right candidate (which will be ours - not theirs) I'll bet they vote Blue. You've got to have more faith in your party! I do.

You'll see.

4. Let's not wet our pants over this guy, or Jay Rockefeller
Memorial service for Sago miners preaches fatalism and submission

By Jerry Isaacs
17 January 2006

The “hope” was presumably provided by Governor Manchin and the presence of US senators Robert Byrd and Jay Rockefeller, as well as officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration who were present in the audience. State and federal officials have assured the families that the miners “did not die in vain” and that a thorough investigation into the causes of the Sago Mine disaster will lead to improvements in mining safety.

This is no less cynical. Each of these politicians has been bought and paid for by coal interests in West Virginia. Rockefeller, whose name is synonymous with Big Coal and the repression of coal miners, dispatched hundreds of state police against striking miners when he was West Virginia governor during the 1977-78 walkout by 120,000 miners. Manchin, a former coal broker, received more money from coal interests for his 2004 election campaign than any other politician in state history.

Any investigation by these corporate-controlled politicians will at best result in a slap on the wrist for the owners of the Sago Mine, while the pro-business policies of deregulation pursued by both political parties—Democratic and Republican—will only assure that such disasters will be repeated in the future.

6. that's on the heels of that mining tragedy
not to take anything away from this guy, but doing what looks like a not terrible job in the face of a disaster tends to inflate poll numbers

7. You're right.... Probably experienced a "Guilliani boost"

According to Wikipedia, he's only been in office (as Governor) for one year although he has an extensive political history.
