Dan Rather: "Three People Sitting In A Room Shouting At Each Other May Be Interesting, It May Be Entertaining, But It's Not News"...

The Oregonian | January 20, 2006 at 11:06 PM

The rise of cable and the explosion of the Internet have resulted in the Balkanization of the national conversation. Just so many voices. Many people these days actually seem to believe there's no such thing as actual news. It's all just attitude. How is this affecting our civic life?

Call me what you want, but I firmly believe there is such a thing as news. From where I sit, too many people want to advance their own partisan agendas and cast it as "news." A surprising number of people are willing to accept it as such. Three people sitting in a room shouting at each other may be interesting, it may be entertaining, but it's not news.

He hit the nail on the head there... I am one of those who believe there is NO REAL news, that it is all opinion or propaganda

3. He's right. Editorializing the news leaves it virtually worthless.
It wouldn't be quite so bad if there was more balance but what we have today is incredibly damaging.

I'm glad to hear him speaking out about this.

4. Neither is the insistence on two sides to every issue...
in this kind of exchange. On some things there is only one side: that of truth. Our press is meant to educate people as citizens.

7. yeah and shouting about mystery topics/ because they don't explain
As a matter of fact this just dawned on me before I was up to speed with the Abramoff drama...because of work and the holidays I didn't have a clue what was going on with that scandal, until a couple of weeks ago when I found the time to do my own research and get up to speed.

I would tune in to so called news only to hear point counter point crap about Abramoff, but they never explained what the hell the base line of the argument or the scandal was to the viewer.

I realized then that the only people watching today's brand of so called cable news are partisan to begin with, or else they wouldn't have a clue what the hell was being talked about.

8. We need to tell all these talk show pundits to....
shut up and go get a real job. I am so bloody sick of them.

I think this country is starving for straight-forward information about important stuff going on in the world--you know, what used to be called News!
