Best Republican Senators: here's the list: & here's why
(reposted by special request from mom cat)

it took me hours to do this (in fact it took me an entire freakin day)
(bkkd = boxer, kerry, kennedy, durbin who usually vote together)

the winners:
LINCOLN CHAFEE: voted 63% with bkkd
OLYMPIA SNOW: voted 56% with bkkd
SUSAN COLLINS: voted 53% with bkkd
ARLEN SPECTER: voted 41% with bkkd (gasp!)
(call the top three for an alito filibuster)
most "conservative" was mcconnell who voted with bkkd 5.37%

MY RESEARCH:
i looked at all the votes for 2005
there were 366
i did not include the votes where a large majority voted together (around 80 or so--unless a republican voted in the minority with other bkkd)
i did not inlcude votes where all dems voted one way and republicans voted the other way.

i looked at split votes(where at least one republican crossed over with bkkd)

my baseline was boxer, kennedy, kerry and durbin (bkkd)
(on the votes where they split their vote i did not include; i did use one or two votes where durbin voted against bkk and counted any republican who voted with bkk.)

that left me with 205 votes that i looked at. out of 205, here's the republican vote count (with the "friendliest" having the most votes listed)
129 chafee
114 snowe
108 collins
84 specter
80 dewine

7. I really appreciate the effort you put into this but
no matter how often they vote with the liberals, when the chips are down, when it's really important they support bushco. It reminds me of the Mcarthy era, except back then the repubs weren't as bad as the party today. They knew better then and didn't act until it was almost too late, and they know better now. Shame on Chafee, Snowe and Collins. They know better.

10. ". . . didn't act until it almost too late . . ."
so which is it: they'll never do anything other than support BushCo and the world be damned, or they are capable of enlightened understanding when finally thrust into an untenable situation? You've presented us with two absolutes. Is compromise possible or is it but a pipedream?

16. I don't know if it's possible
I just finished reading Haynes' Johnson's Age of Anxiety in which he compares republicans in the Mcarthy era to today's republicans. He argues that it was a far more diverse party then. Is there anyone like Senator Flanders in the Senate today? It doesn't appear so as of this date.

12. Dewine and Voinovich from Ohio;
Are going to be hard to unseat. They can go more toward the middle and take any challenger's moderate vote away and still pick up the klan vote. Hell, the Columbus Dispatch did not once endorse John Glenn. Imagine what they will say to any newcomer.

17. They are worthless to this country as long as they continue
to vote with bushco and the repugs.

No individual good deed or single vote cast by one of these people is worth anything as long as they support this current administration and its policies. And, as far as I can see, when push comes to shove and bushco wants a bill passed, a hearing suppressed, etc. they are on his side.

28. K&R

Folks try to look past the word "best" and onto the (remote, yes) possibility of coaxing a couple Alito "no" votes. Or at least making them waver enough to give Frist an ulcer in the process.

This is good info, thanks to the OP!
