A state Senate committee has voted to try to make another attempt to remove racist language from Alabama's constitution. But opinions remain so divided from the failed attempt in 2004 that some legislators say it's best to let the issue rest in a legislative election year.
"What the state can ill afford is another failed effort to remove the racist language," House Speaker Seth Hammett, D-Andalusia, said. "I don't want us to announce around the world that we are doing this unless we know this time that we can get it done."
On Tuesday, the Senate Constitution, Campaign Finance, Ethics and Elections Committee voted 8-0 for a proposed constitutional amendment that would remove unenforceable sections of Alabama's constitution that require the separation of the schools by races and that impose poll taxes, which were once used to keep blacks and some poor whites from voting ...
