Got off the phone with a Bush freak.
Yeah, one of my best friends too. Anyway, she stupidly asked me how I thought things were going for us Dems, what with Kerry winning and all. As a point of reference, she is still in Colorado and isn't exposed to much liberal thinking (her parents got her a book by Coulter for X-Mas).

I let loose with a full liberal broadside.

I let her know that first of all, Kerry has a more liberal voting record that Dean (someone here mentioned that, I don't remember which group came up with it) and that if people think the Kerry is going to be some sort of moderate they were wrong (which is ok with me, liberal=good). So, after recovering from that news for a second, she told me that there was NOOOOOO way Bush was going to lose. Then I asked her if she heard about that poll, you know, the one where Bush is losing to Kerry... all she could come up with was that "who did they ask, I don't believe in polls" crap. Funny how they were all into polls back when George had a 90% apporval rating, isn't it?

I wrapped it up by saying how we were going to sink her boy in November, no ifs, ands or buts.

Now if I could only get myself to believe that...

1. Any clue *why* she's a Republican?
It's always interesting to hear their reasons for actually *being* a Republican. I often find that they can spout the vitriol, but their allegiance if faith-based.

2. Well, let's see...
1. Her parents are rich (or else they do a really good job of looking that way)

2. She's "super-Christian", you know... the purple Telletubby is gay type.

8. Now there's a question that deserves an answer.
What do we talk about?

Well, for the most part we avoid politics, well, she avoids them. We avoid religion, although I enjoy discussing religion with others of her ilk. Mostly we just talk about people we know. Lately I've been wondering why we're still friends. But she is a nice person and I value her friendship very much, we've been good friends for 5 years now. Opposites attract, I guess, although there are few other options where I live.

3. Be glad she's not a Georgia conservative
Be glad you weren't talking to one of the thousands of Republicans surrounding me here in Newt Gingrich and Bob Barr's district. You can't talk politics with them. You talk politics while they quote the most screechy parts of Ann Coulter and Neal Boortz. Some even say they realize there's a deficit and Bush lied about the war but, what the heck, they're voting for Bush anyhow. Democratic Underground is my pond of sanity in a neocon social desert.

7. You just described my brother and sister-in-law.
And that's where they live.

Both are lovely people in their own right, but just stupid when it comes to this administration. I must point my finger at the Puritans and then to Clinton's BJ. I know that's stupid, too, but stupid is as stupid does.

9. Educate her
Ask her to keep an open mind, to read this, and then tell you if she still thinks Bush should be re-elected.

10. It is sad
that it's very difficult to convert people like this (the picture you've painted is that their whole affiliation is essentially familial and cultural, like being born into a religion), but at least her complacency is mildly reassuring--if most Republicans think like this our turnout will be way better.
