Who fled the building faster in the anthrax scare with the paler faces? The attacked Dems or the GOP?
That is a rhetorical question for those who remember. Which Dems exhibit the most obsequiousness and fear? Those on the left or those closest to being GOP? In that fear who is most willing to dump all rights and duties to bow down before the war president?

3. I like the idea of portraying the Repubs as acting out of fear instead of

calm and reason. It could fly, and it's true.

I wouldn't stress the second point in that manner. All people (even us) are willing to sacrifice some liberties to protect against strong dangers, so as a generalized phrase it fails. The Repubs would just use buzzwords like "common sense restrictions" and "extraordinary circumstances" and make us sound weak. Better to emphasize extreme examples, like the wiretapping of citizens and the arrogance of power. Tie the excesses to Republican partisanship and not to the nation or defense. Use only examples that would upset most people, and that the Republicans have trouble defending, in other words.

4. Yes. Warrantless wiretapping is actually an expression of 2 fears

Fear of the terrorists, and fear of wrong-doing. Why else would he not get warrants.

6. Actually, warrantless wiretapping is a cover

to hide the wiretapping of domestic enemies in the midst of fighting 'terrorists'. If they were only going after terrorists, FISA would cover it, but there were targets that even FISA would deny. Nothing else makes sense.

We can spin the Republicans' excesses as fear, as a reaction out of proportion, and one that endangers us more than protects us. People understand that fear causes panic, and if we can portray Bush and the Republicans as panicked, it helps us. And it plays against their strength, because every time they defend their actions we can spin it as further proof of panic.

It make it easier to convince voters to elect Republicans if they are led to believe that only the Republicans can protect them against one of their greatest fears. It's easier to control people who are willing to give up their Constitutional freedoms for a sense of security.
