From Randi Rhodes: Is Arlen Spector On The Fence Re: Alito?
Just heard a caller on Randi Rhodes say that she talked to a staffer from an (undeclared) Senate office who said that there were "six or eight" Senators still trying to decide whether or not to vote for Alito -- and that one of those on the fence was Arlen Spector.

That was a shocker to me. I thought he said during the hearings he saw nothing that would disqualify Alito.

Can someone confirm this? If Spector is on the fence, who knows if there are other moderate Republicans who also are? Since it looks like only Nelson in NE is going to break ranks and vote for Alito, a wobbly Spector means this entire nomination is SO still in play.

5. Spector is voting for Alito
I'd believe what Spector actual said instead of some anonymous caller.

Operatives on both sides generally agree that, absent some significant revelation or development at the confirmation hearings, three of the 55 Senate Republicans might consider voting against Alito: Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, and Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine.

The following Senators were applauded by Republicans for Choice, so they might be worth calling:

Republicans for Choice, PAC would like to thank the eight Republican members of the US Senate who chose to buck the President and vote their conscience. Their vote to allow doctors overseas who receive UNFPA Funds to decide whether to discuss the sensitive issue of abortion with their patients took real courage.

7. The Issue Isn't Alito - It's The Filibuster
If 44 Dems and 3 Repunks vote against Alito, that means Reid has to find four votes to keep the rules as they are, hold the filibuster, kill Alito, and maybe -- mmmmmaaaaayyyyybbbbeeeee -- deal a devastating blow to the White House's supposed legjuslative ajenduh.

And I do wonder if Arlen wouldn't be one of THOSE votes.
