Liberals look to be in trouble. Surprise surprise.

It's almost time to leave the continent. Where should we go, Australia? No wait, they're conservative too.

Any liberal countries left?

Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 10:45 PM by DWolper
Just the part of the world that brings to mind freedom and democracy.
You're kidding, right?

BTW, your avatar is provocative and gives me cause to pause for the future of our people. As many troubles as we have now in this country - and they are many - I don't believe for a minute that Marxism has any of the answers. Never has, never will.

Our problems will be resolved by a very American ideal called Jeffersonian democracy. Watch that Gore speech again, IndianaGreen. He wasn't calling for a Marxist revolution. He was calling us to our better selves and a return to self-governance; something Latin American Marxism knows little about. When they say, "for the people," merely substitute 'state' for people. Marxism has no history of freedom and democracy. Jeffersonian democracy does. We must simply reclaim our history, as Al Gore said, not throw it overboard.

51. "Jeffersonian democracy"? Tell that to the African slaves!
The people of Latin America have, and are rejecting, the bankruptcy of neoliberalism and capitalism in free democratic elections.

We cannot even claim to have free democratic elections in this country!

53. Ridiculous
That's conspiracy talk. I still believe we have elections that are as honest as anywhere else in the world. By the way, do you really think Latin American elections are fair and honest?

If Democrats of your stripe gain a serious voice in this country - God help us. We think we're losing elections now - just wait.

Al Gore should be our model - not Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez.

55. We could use a Bolivarian revolution in this country!
Here is an excellent August 2005 BBC article about the socialism that is being build in Venezuela by the workers.

Chavez calls for democracy at work

Iain Bruce
In Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela

The heat and the noise are almost unbearable in the casting room of Line 3 at Alcasa.

This is one of two big aluminium plants in the south-eastern city of Puerto Ordaz, where most of Venezuela's basic industries are concentrated.

It is also the test bed for a new experiment in co-management, which President Hugo Chavez says is a key step towards a "socialism of the twenty-first century".

Alcides Rivero, who works here as a maintenance electrician, says co-management means that for the first time in this company's 37 years of existence, the workforce has control.

"It's us, the workers", he says, "who decide on questions of production and technology, and it's us who elect who will be our managers."

Marivit Lopez, from the personnel department, explains that the workers are also drawing up a "participatory budget" for 2006.

"The different departmental works councils are discussing and amending the existing proposal so that we get a budget that really fits the company's needs," she says.

63. A little further down in the article...
Tony Herrera, of the Venezuelan-American Chamber of Commerce, says it is still very difficult to grasp exactly what is meant by the government's co-management proposal.

He fears it may just mean more state control over the economy.

"The problem in Venezuela has been that the road to hell has been paved with good intentions in the past," he says.

"The state has made many attempts to intervene in the economy over many years, and the result is there for all to see."

The head of Venezuela's main business association, Fedecameras, agrees.

Albis Munoz says she doesn't want to see co-management imposed on Venezuelan companies by law, but she says she wouldn't have a problem with the kind of co-management developed by the Christian Democrats in Germany - in other words, a freely negotiated, strategic alliance between employees, employers and consumers.

That, however, does not seem to be what the people at Alcasa have in mind.

42. Thanks for the link JD! Now I am a bit more educated, but a bit more
confused also, lol. In post #22 Brundle states "unless they win a minority". I think they use different wording, stated Miss Obvious.

I like the way Canada can hold an election if things are a mess. And what a dream with paper and pencil ballots. I'm in PA and our morons in charge just embraced ES&S! Wheee...

It's definitely a worry to think another idiot fake could end up winning in Canada. I hope they don't decide to become Dumb and Dumberer.

Many had them pegged to lose to new majority government.

While this is certainly terrible news tonight, me thinks the Liberals might have dodged a deadly bullet. If this is the backlash from years of governing, it's not a overwhelming call for change.

I wonder what will happen in 2007 with the next election, as you mention Brundle_Fly it is likely to be called before too long. Maybe 2 years, tops.
