TOLL FREE NUMBERS TO THE CAPITOL SWITCHBOARD...and more info:
These numbers work at night too! I just called Olympia Snowe's office and urged her to vote no or at least not to block a filibuster.

CALL ALL NIGHT.

CALL FOR A FILIBUSTER AGAINST ALITO

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) is on record as having stated that he thinks we've got 41 votes against the Alito nomination.

Various activist citizen lobbies maintain toll free numbers so you can lobby your own senators on this issue. Call the Capitol Switchboard toll free and ask for your senator's office (both of them, one at a time, and if you live in a Republican-controlled state, even better yet):
1-888 355 3588
1-888 818 6641
1-877 851 6437

If you have some really good arguments against the Alito nomination to offer your senators, faxing is the best way to get "read." Find their fax numbers by clicking on your state here: http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/index.html

Need a good argument? Here's one: Samuel Alito throughout his professional career has demonstrated that he'll say anything and do anything to get the job he's interviewing for. He'll lie (if his testimony to date is to be believed), he'll cheat (taking the opposite view of his testimony on the bench, just as he has as a judge writing stinking dissenting opinions), he'll steal (by taking away our constitutional rights). After all, it's the new Republican Way.

2. You DO understand

Filibuster = Nuclear Option = no more filibusters EVER on judicial nominations. The numbers are clear. It's unfortunate, but why get hopes up for something that will be only symbolic, but hurt us in the future?

Be guided by reality and love of country - not emotion that hurts us all in the long run.

I wish it were different, but it's not. That's the score.

3. Which is more important, the Constitution, or the filibuster?
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 11:17 PM by Wordie
I'd gladly sacrifice the filibuster when the Constitution is at risk, as it is with this nominee. That's what the Senators need to think about. Further, Durbin has said a filibuster is a possibility.

And when the nuclear option first came up, the Republicans had unchallenged power. Now, Frist is having trouble keeping them all in line, and they are worried about their re-election campaigns, and how Bush's poll numbers are going to rub off on them, too. It's a new day, as far as the nuclear option is concerned. Frist might not be able to pull it off now.

Further, there was an exception to the triggering of the nuclear option, and that was "extraordinary circumstances." Have you read about Google record being requested by the government? How about Roberts writing a dissent in the recent Oregon Death with Dignity Act? And what about that signing statement that President Bush attached to the Anti-torture Act, essentially saying that it was his presidential perogative to simply ignore the Act's provisions, if he determined that he needed to?

All of these things have happened since the idea of the nuclear option was first floated. And all of these things constitute "extraordinary circumstances" in my book. I'm just hoping that our Democratic Senators will see it the same way. It may not be such a threat as it once was.

Please help with this effort and contact the Senators.

10. Agreed. Call 'em whether they're good guys or bad guys.
Even those on the Dark Side need to know we are there - in ever-expanding numbers.

13. My thoughts exactly. Even Republicans need to know how deep the
opposition to Alito runs, and be provided with examples of his "judicial activism," since this is their constant complaint.

Here is a great resource on Alito:

5. Nuclear Option means that we bring things to a grinding halt. Also.
it they go nuclear, we can scream "FOUL".
Furthermore, there are going to be Republicans who don't want to go Nukie...This is an election year, and such a blatant power grab would backfire...big time.
Cowering in the face of a threat will get us nowhere.

7. Kicked and HEARTILY recomended!
Nice to have those new toll free numbers. My old one doesn't work anymore - I get one of those "all circuits are busy" messages.

These should be on a 3x5 card by your phone.

Thanks for these! An EXCELLENT public service!

14. Done!
I asked my puke senators why they are so willing to abdicate power to a "unitary President". The woman at Cornyn's office asked, "Did Alito say that?"
