The Constitution - What's left? - today's cartoon
With President Bush and his executive branch trampling the Constitution in a way not seen since the Joe McCarthy era, with the NSA engaging in wholesale domestic surveillance, with the Pentagon keeping files on DU and ordinary protesters, what's left of the Constitution we hold so dear?

1. Bush called the First Amendment a "custom" today.
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 12:49 AM by AtomicKitten
First they minimize civil liberties, then marginalize them, and then put them in contention with "freedom" as the neocons see it.

Yes, our future is dim unless Alito is filibustered. He'll be the enabler of a balls-out annihilation of the constitution as we know it.

On edit: Good job. Nominated.

say hullo to my little friend, the Constitution

Isn't it ironic that those who find trampling under the constitution easiest are the ones who SWORE they would uphold it?

14. Surely you remember...
... all the "alphabet" groups from NARAL to the NRA were up in arms a few years back over the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act, sometimes referred to as the Incumbent Protection Act. Something about no political ads 30 days gefore a primary election and 60 days before a general election. Congress came up with the bill, Bush signed it and it was upheld by the SCOTUS. What part of "Congress shall make no law" did all these folks misunderstand???

16. Sorry mate,
but I don't listen to Limbaugh. Is he now claiming to be the author of the Bill of Rights??? And when did citing the US Constitution and/or the Bill of Rights become nothing more than a talking point?

17. When you criticize Bush, it'll be the first time.
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 08:03 AM by Neil Lisst
Maybe that will change, but unless you have an opinion that doesn't include trashing Feingold or Gore, I doubt it.

You're free to give your opinion, but I'm free to question your penchant for finding Democrats, instead of Bush, to attack.

You equate uncontrolled spending by monied interests with the first amendment, something no self-respecting Democrat would likely say.

18. BOTH sides have that First Amendment right...
... and both got around McCain-Feingold with the inception of the 521 groups, or whatever number it was that the Swift Boaters raised their money under. You kid yourself believing both sides don't have plenty of monied interests. Soros isn't exactly a pauper, right up there with Murdoch.

13. We won a cold war without stomping the constitution ...
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 07:37 AM by Neil Lisst
... but we can't fight this war without keeping the freedoms that make us America.

Bush and those who support his actions have completely lost sight of who we are as a people. They lack the respect for the political opinions of other Americans so necessary for a real democracy to function.

What do you think will happen if I sign on to the Freeper site as Jeffersons Ghost and not as a spy to present the liberal teachings and inner-Kingdom of Jesus? He wasn't a white person, I hope you know. Please realize I'm crazy enough to do it but will it be a waste of time or can I awaken a few sleeping sheep?

It's a wonder I'm even tolerated here in liberal-land! I think part of the reason people put up with me at DU is that I'm free-thinking, unafraid, stubborn and thick-skinned. Maybe free-thinking will be my downfall there... If I decide to do it I'll share the results of my journey with all at DU who are interested... are they openly racist there? I don't think I'm even thick-skinned enough not to attack that sickness when I find it.

Unfortunately, they're not in the online versions of the papers, but in the print versions.

Bushback Mt. was published Sunday. This one.

38. do you mean get BACK into writing for a paper?
Well a time machine would be nice and I don't mean the current Time Warner Machine... I'd rather die than write the type stories modern papers demand... Money just isn't worth what a modern hard news journalist has to sacrifice to be a reporter. Down here they won't even print my LTTEs. You should see what they print in this NYT owned toilet-paper. Thanks for saying so, though, tavalon.

I've told them if they want to run it in their online version, we'll set it up for them, but most papers are still in the print medium mentality, not the online mentality.

36. Well, they have a constituency to please, too.
I know some of our stuff is too strong for many publications.

But in time, others will pick it up. Success begets success.

I'm accustomed to projects that take years from start to finish. We're barely 4 months into this one.
