Alito Confirmed in Committee
January 24, 2006
As predicted Samuel Alito was approved in the Senate Judiciary Committee a short time ago, with the votes split — 10 to 8 — along party lines. The full transcript of today’s proceedings are available here.
The full Senate is expected to take the final vote on Alito’s nomination by the end of the week.
That vote is also expected to follow along party lines, with only one Democrat _ Ben Nelson of Nebraska _ coming out so far in support of Alito. Republicans hold the balance of power in the Senate 55-44, with one independent.
Rumors abound in the blogosphere about a possible filibuster, but there has been no confirmation.
Senator Kennedy’s statement today, to the Judiciary Committee on the Alito Nomination is available here.
