Jenna and Barbara 'break their resolutions'
http://thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/UndertheDome/012506.html

Bush twins break their resolutions

By Jeff Dufour

There were cigarette girls passing out smokes, chocolates and even condoms. There were bottles of vodka on the tables courtesy of sponsor Grey Goose. There were fishnet-clad dancers, sporting handcuffs and police hats, gyrating on a pole.

And there, somewhat incongruously, were the Bush twins, hanging among a preppier enclave in the far corner of the club.

The scene was the “Broken Resolutions” party, a celebration of vice at the new Play Lounge on Connecticut Avenue on Saturday night.

Belying the Reliable Source’s recent characterization of Barbara as “trampy,” she was attired in a sexy yet perfectly tasteful sequin-trimmed tank top as she sat sipping her cocktail. Jenna, ever the wild one, was spotted standing — some say dancing — on the sofa.

2. Isn't one of them a teacher?
A non-Bushco connected teacher could lose his/her job for something like this. Teachers are on duty 24 hours per day. Buy one too many bottles of wine at the local store and people talk. Have an unfamiliar car parked outside your house all night and the neighbors will talk. The morality police are always on the lookout, especially in small towns.

5. Good Lord, where do you live?
I live in the Bible Belt, teacher since '72. Our union would eat alive anybody who fired a teacher for drinking, going out at night or having overnight guests. In fact, it is in the contract that a teacher's private life is private.

We even have two teachers at the high school who are exotic dancers!

I thought I lived in podunkville!

I've been a teacher for 32 years (thank you GI Bill), and before I met my wife I was living with a nude dancer from a downtown D.C. club. Like you, my union would have devoured anyone who attempted to make an issue of my private life.

23. You are lucky to have a union.
I taught almost 15 years in SC. There are no unions in this state. If they want to get rid of you, then they will. Luckily, 10 of those years were at a community college.

Eight years ago, I left teaching after realizing how badly burnout I had gotten. Decided to return to the computer field for a few years, then go back to teaching. Surprise, I don't even think about teaching anymore.

Teaching was my love and my life, but the politicians changed everything, along with the lack of respect given to teachers by the school administration, the public, and the politicians. Teachers in SC are poorly paid and treated like children.

I can't speak for those in states outside the Bible Belt, but I have a theory about the state of the teaching profession in these states. Here it is:

Before 1970, teaching was considered "women's work". Just something for women to play around at while their husbands earned a living. They were not even paid a living wage. If they had not historically been women, teachers would have decent pay, be allowed to make more decisions about how to run their classrooms, and be treated with respect.

What are some of your ideas about why teachers are poorly paid and treated with so little respect?

28. I live in Eugene, Oregon
and it would never happen here, but in some of the smaller rural towns around here this kind of stuff does happen. I am also a teacher and have heard stories from colleagues in small towns where they just don't feel like they are as free to act and speak as someone who doesn't work with children daily. And if you were openly gay? Forget about getting or holding a job in those towns.

Here in the suburbs of DC, a good friend of mine wouldn't so much as go to a restaurant with his partner within 5 miles of his school catchment area, lest his students or their parents see them touch each other in an unguarded moment.

Basically throughout the campaign they talked about how Jenna was going to teach these low-income kids and it wasn't until after the campaign we find out she didn't get the job!

8. That's not really odd
In fact, my grandfather informed me -- after we had already named our newborn daughter -- of an Italian tradition that the oldest son (me) is supposed to name his firstborn daughter after his mother. He had named his oldest daughter(my mother) after his own mother.

that you are named (if you wished to) after a family member that had been deceased, unless of course it was a Jr.

My point being, it's odd how mommy bush controls moron* the way she does and his naming of his daughter always struck me as an Oedipus sort of thing.

So each of the twins is named after a grandmother. I feel sorry for Barbara, though. It's bad enough to be named after the old dragon, but usually she's just known as "the other one", or "not Jenna".

by most people in the Democratic party, for being a well adjusted and sensible young lady. BOTH, she was despised, degraded, called names by the majority of the freepers at freerepublic. It was even said that Chelsea was not Bill Clinton's child. James McDougal was the father, remember?

32. Yes, and we are treating these two young women
who aren't doing anything I haven't done, the same way.

Why are daughters, wives, etc., of people we don't like somehow always "sluts"? I find that denigrating to women everywhere. If my father is a political person, then I, by association, am sexually promiscuous? Why the emphasis on these girls' genitalia?

Misogyny is a bipartisan disease.

Isn't it more of a reflection on their censorious parents than anything else? Like junior and his moral values in cleaning up the White House after it was adulterated by Bill Clinton.

Get thee to a freaking nunnery.

If those photos make them promiscuous, we are actually in puritanical nation as defined by liberals for crissakes.

Their father is an asshat. From what I see, they are fairly normal.

So here's what really kills me. Your point seems to be to use the children's behavior to show what hypocrites their parents are. That's just plain shitty in my book.

41. Problem
I think the problem is not that people dislike their father. It is that people are angry at the girls due to the hypocrisy that it shows on the part of there father and the Republican Party. All the time Republicans like Bush and his brother try to tell people like you and me that we are bad people. They are always saying that people who do things like drinking a lot, dancing at crazy bars, using drugs, and having a lot of sex outside of marriage are bad people. The problem is that they and their children do just those things. To make things worse on many occasions the people who they criticize like the Clintons and their daughter Chelsea are the ones who either do not do those things or do them in a quite manner in which we never find out about it. People do not call them sluts because they hate their father. They do it because the girls represent the hypocrisy of the Republican Party.

67. So it boils down to playing up the shame of the acts of children
to show how hypocrticial the parents and by extension the party is.

Let me ask you this? Was it then wrong for slackjawed morons in the GOP to portray Chelsea's partying (covered wall to freaking wall by the Birt tabs) as examples of her parents and by extension the Democratic party's values?

Even worse, what are we making a big deal about here? That the now of age girls attended a party where they served alcohol and condoms were seen ...oh the horror.

When the fuck did we turn into puritans for the sake of vengeance?

Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 11:13 AM by Hong Kong Cavalier
...to how public figures treated Chelsea Clinton.
Rush Limbaugh implied she was a dog on his television show. I remember it. My roommate was watching that episode, and I was in the room.

And lookie here! Here's John Derbyshire of The National Review saying we need to kill Chelsea Clinton because she might be a threat to the United States some time in the future!
www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire021501.shtml

Even for ugly rhetoric, this is pretty ugly. Here's his
defense of that article. He says he was being partly "tongue-in-cheek".

www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire022201.shtml

And don't forget this quote from the second article: "Politicians' offspring are not automatically immune from public mockery."
Even if his article was "tongue-in-cheek", it's pretty vile.

So you know what? I don't care if the poor, defenseless Bush twins get mocked on an internet message board. They actively campaigned to get their father re-elected, the high and exalted leader of the GOP, the so-called "morals" party, and I'll be damned if I'm not going to point out the hypocrisy of this every chance I get.

Something he stated as a "joke" in public.

And then there's that classy Rush Limbaugh's "humor" when he held up a picture of "The White House Dog" -- yep, you guessed it, Chelsea Clinton (still a child at the time).

I don't think the GOP could find anyone on our side who is as prominent as McCain or Limbaugh who has said anything nearly as petty and mean about Bush's adult daughters.

Unless you can tell me what her job is and what a person her age with degrees from the colleges she had usually makes I will support the idea that she deserved them. As I said before there are both government and private companies that are willing to pay people with her qualifications about that much money. So can you tell me where exactly she works. There are people that can ask $50+ thousand for the jobs they do.

Considering she has a master's degree in international relations and will be working as a consultant dealing with issues like health care and corporate finance I can understand her getting that type of salary.

$100k for qualified individual is no big deal in a city where any big zero with a fu-fu graduate degree and a connection can make substantially more than that. First-year lawyers can easily make $150k and more if they can get the right person's attention.

Lincoln is insane.

30. So what?
They're both of legal drinking age now, yeah? Why shouldn't they go out and get blasted? I mean, sure, it's an embarrassment to their father, so if you're Bush, I can see how you wouldn't like it. But in and of itself, who cares? What's wrong with going out, drinking, and dancing your ass off? When did that become worse than getting AIDS? Jesus! I thought the GOP was the fucking Fun Police.

31. I actually feel sorry for both of them
When I was their age I went to places just like that club they were in. Didn't make me a bad person.

What makes it worth talking about is that they are the children of the president who leads the party that preaches "family values."

33. I absolutely agree with that...
The fact that they're Bush's kids means that this becomes an issue. But a lot of the discussion since your OP has simply been to rail against the actions themselves, not the larger context. I don't have a problem with your OP, and I have no problem with discussing the Bush twins' nightlife in its larger political context. What I DO have a problem with is condemning a little life in the fastlane. One of the big reasons I'm proud to call myself a Democrat is that the Democrats don't stand for some phony family values bullshit that judges everyone based on the morals and values of a minority. So when I see people ripping into the Bush girls solely based on their desire to have a good time, I get a little irked.

34. They did not sign up for this job
having their every move reported upon, living under constant threat of kidnapping or worse.

To me, in my personal code of political ethics, I lay off the spouses. It's beneath us. It belittles us. It weakens our message. It makes US LIKE OUR NEMISES. JUST LIKE THEM.

37. who cares?
First of all, they're young adults doing things that a lot of young adults, of both parties, do.

Second, from the story, there's no indication that they were engaging in any "wild" behavior or getting "blasted". It indicates Barbara was sipping a cocktail and Jenna might have been dancing on a couch in a corner of the bar away from the main action.

Third, its not as if chimpy or anyone else in this administration has been seeking the reimposition of prohibition. Yes, they have pandered to rw fundies, but it would be one thing if the twins were seen going into an x-rated movie theater. Going to a bar? Doesn't make them hypocrites. Not sure I can say that of people who would sit in judgment of them, but who don't condemn that behavior when engaged in by others.

Does anyone think that making an issue of the twins going to a bar gains sympathy for our side?

38. Of course
surely they know by now that whenever they go out anywhere to party that they are going to end up in the newspaper. So you'd think they'd be more conscious of where they are, who they are with, etc.

Unless they do it to spite the old man -- another normal thing for young people to do.

58. Quite frankly, I don't give a rat's ass what these two bimbos do
in their personal lives.

If they decide to do something with their lives, i.e, get a real job, go to graduate school or perhaps maybe even enlist in the Army or the Marines and go to Iraq, then it might interest me.

Other than that, I view these these two as totally irrelevant. It's quite obvious to me that they have always gotten everything they ever wanted from their parents without having to work for anything.

That being said, look at their "parental units". What's that old saying, "apples don't fall too far from the tree"?

64. Not suprising, I went to school in New Haven CT around the same time as
the Bush daughters. I knew some bouncers at some of the local clubs that saw them there PARTYING
before they were 21, likely with fake Id's.

71. Is there any evidence these girls aren't just airheads and bimbos?
If not, they aren't worth discussing, when there are matters of substance at hand.

74. These girls should be expending there youthful energy over in Iraq.
Laura could then be sick with worry and maybe "W", too. Does "W" ever really worry? I want Laura and "W" to know what other families are going through.

Who knows? Maybe the Army could "knock them into shape"......"Be all that you can be, etc." I certainly know that the body armor would improve.
