NO Alito - ACTION
Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel Alito by a 10-8 party-line vote. The full Senate could vote on his nomination by the end of this week. If confirmed, Alito could threaten decades of environmental progress and jeopardize the rights and freedoms Americans depend on. Please send a letter to your senators urging them to oppose his confirmation!

In the coming months the Supreme Court will decide two cases that could radically restrict our ability to protect the vast majority of the nation's waterways under the Clean Water Act. Judge Alito's record indicates that he's likely to side with those who oppose a strong Clean Water Act. It also bodes poorly for future cases challenging the Endangered Species Act and other important laws.

Judge Alito has also voted to restrict citizen access to courts, making it harder for victims of pollution to sue companies that have broken the law. He poses a clear threat to the environmental protections that Americans hold dear. Please urge your senator to vote NO.

2. Done -- my response.

I do not like canned messages. I put in my own. Here it is:

In no time in its past has this country been at a more important political watershed. The total control of the branches of government by one party, to the exclusion of all opposing points of view, is in the balance. This makes the Alito SCOTUS appointment probably the most important one since the founders designed our system of government. Judge Alito's extreme positions on issues as far ranging as executive power and personal freedoms make it essential that he not ascend to the country's highest court.

I urge you to oppose this nomination with all the ferver you can muster. To preserve our government's delicate balance, I also urge you to oppose any attempt for cloture to prevent this appointment. I can think of no more desperate circumstances than this appointment. The time to draw the line is now.

Once Judge Alito is on the court, it will be too late to undo. Your country needs you to stand firm and stop the unwarranted and reckless Republican power grab. Please take your oath seriously to "preserve and protect" the Constitutional separation of powers.

Thank you very much for your time.
