CALL LANDRIEU and read her the riot act - don't let her off the hook
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 09:17 PM by beaconess
just because of her statement.

One of the reasons Dems keep pulling this crap is that we don't punish them on the back end for things like this. They screw us over and then we get pissed and leave them alone.

But she needs to hear from us. Call her and let her know that this is UNACCEPTABLE!

Since when does a Senator refuse to fight for the right thing because the Senate schedule is too busy? Why does she think it's acceptable to install an anti-civil, anti-choice judge who is enamoured of the executive branch on the Supreme Court as a trade-off for her pie-in-the-sky Katrina relief (like the Republicans are REALLY going to give her the funding she wants!)?

Remind her that we expect our Senators to walk and chew gum at the same time - they can fight for Katrina money for their district AND fight for justice on the federal courts!

Let her know that she shouldn't sign any long-term leases on property in DC - we're not rolling over and playing nice on this one!

1. Damn straight!
The Alito issue is one we'll remember. Have a backbone, Mary, or get the phuck out of the Senate.

2. Remember when she came close to threatening King Dumbass** on TV?
She took Snuffleupagus on a helicopter tour of SE La. and just about lost it when she saw the ruins of her family's fishing camp. She said she'd like to punch Bush** out for not lifting a finger to help -- on national TV!

And now? "Sit, Mary. Roll over, Mary. Good girl! Here's your treat..."

4. What did she say?
I missed it. Did she say she was voting for Alito or that she was against the filibuster?

5. here
Sen. Landrieu said:

“Because we have such a full plate of pressing issues before Congress, a filibuster at this time would be, in my view, very counterproductive. It is imperative that we remain focused on creating the tools New Orleans, Louisiana and the Gulf Coast will need to rebuild. This includes passing the Baker bill and allowing our state to keep its fair share of offshore energy revenues. We simply cannot afford to bring the Senate to a halt at a time when we need its action the most. If called to vote for cloture on Judge Alito’s nomination, I will vote yes.

“I will continue to consult with constituents, groups, organizations and colleagues to decide on my final vote. I do think it is important that we have an up or down vote.”

6. Bad enough that she'd vote against cloture - but by announcing it
this way, she's undermining the entire filibuster effort.

Nice going, Mary. We really appreciate your solidarity and loyalty.

Hope things work out between you and the Republicans - I'm sure they'll take GOOD care of you and you'll find you made the right choice!

Not.

7. Don't our senators only work 30 hours a week? Maybe if they
put in the 60-80 a lot of the rest of the country has to do they'd get more done.

9. Actually - Senators work VERY long hours -
they may only be on the floor 30 hours a week, but they spend a great deal of time in their offices and traveling around their districts, etc.

The Senators may be lots of things, but lazy or underworked they're not.

8. Is that the backdoor deal?
We'll give you the Baker (rebuilding) bill if you stand down on Alito?

Powerful leverage, that.

10. Who knows? But she hasn't been any good so far at brokering deals
with them. Time after time, she's Charlie Brown and they're Lucy with the football.

11. Buyout bill was thrown last-minute curveball

White House balked at the costs despite frenzy of calls, Baker says
Wednesday, December 21, 2005
By Bruce Alpert
Washington bureau
WASHINGTON -- Last-minute opposition from the Bush administration stalled legislation to create a federal corporation that would buy homes damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, according to the bill's sponsor.

But Rep. Richard Baker, R-Baton Rouge, said the administration is willing to move the bill forward early next year if some changes are made.

Baker said he has gotten word from Al Hubbard, director of the White House's National Economic Council, that "we have a meeting of minds that in concept this bill should move forward." He said Hubbard offered his help fine-tuning the bill to create more financial accountability.

DJ Nordquist, spokeswoman for federal Katrina recovery coordinator Don Powell, was less direct when asked about the latest White House position on the Baker bill

Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 10:23 PM by radio4progressives
Millions of dollars for Katrina survivors and now it's time to listen to think about the fact that THIS decision impacts ALL Americans including those who care deeply and have worked tirelessly and have fought against the machine that created that disaster in the first place.

Her Allegience should be to the the PEOPLE in the entire Country and if she stands WITH US, we will have her BACK on everything she's trying to accomplish for the people in her state of Lousiana.

15. Mary is totally focused on trying to get help for people of New Orleans..
And God knows they need it. I can't blame her for that. But I wish she could bring herself to see that this is a very important decision also.

16. No one is asking her to donate a kidney - just vote against cloture!
She's voting anyway, so why not cast the principled vote?

And then she can go back to begging Bush for money for Louisiana.

19. Her rationale that is truly vile
Even if you disagree with her decision to vote for cloture, it is her decision. However, I am completely disgusted with her rationale. She tugs at our heartstrings for Katrina relief and support - everyone is supposed to have a singular focus on New Orleans and help LA.

20. We need to call Sen. Reid
and tell him to demand that Landrieu (and others) support a filibuster--or else! We can demand Reid threatens to take money away from Katrina relief if she doesn't go along with a Scalito filibuster. PLAY HARDBALL!
