TX: Strayhorn gets Democratic cash
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/012606dntextxcash.173c62f6.html

Many of Mrs. Strayhorn's givers are longtime sources of Democratic money, not only big-dollar trial lawyers who have filled her campaign coffers but also party stalwarts.

"It's worse than sad. It's damn near tragic," said Charles Elliott, a political science professor at Texas A&M University at Commerce and a former member of the State Democratic Executive Committee.

"Some fairly heavy hitters and middle-sized Democrats are throwing money at her ... and we have absolutely nothing with which to entice them on our end."

<snip>

"What's happening is that money is going to the 'anybody but Perry' contingent, which right now is Strayhorn," he said. "It's our job to demonstrate that a Democrat can be a credible opponent and can win. And right now folks don't believe that."

19. Gammage is a great choice
He has a very impressive history to draw from and his platform is also appealing. I just wish he would have tossed his hat in sooner. I've known him and his family for years (our children went to school together) and didn't know for sure he was running until right before it was officially announced. I'd been pitching for Bell prior to his decision.

I think if Gammage can get his monies up and his message out he will beat Perry and be a better choice for the state than Strayhorn.

8. Yep. Very electable. Hope he makes it through the primary. I'm
sort of afraid that GOPers will flood the Democratic primaries and/or hack the vote to get someone less electable nominated. They do that in Texas.

9. I like Bob Gammage for the Dem nomination.

Chris Bell is a good guy, but I think Gammage is better.

As for Strayhorn, she's always been in it for herself, whether running as a Dem, a Pub, or now an independent. I don't think she helps Dems by running, however.

13. I think the Mean Ol' Lady running is a godsend for us
Governor Goodhair is going to get the support of the Talibornagains. If Carole 4Names can peel off the less-insane Repubs who can't bring themselves to vote Dem, then our candidate has a chance to win with the support of Dems and independents. I agree that Gammage is our stronger candidate. I don't dislike Bell, but the guy has been running for a year and has hardly gotten any traction. I heard Bob Gammage speak again last night and he actually seems confidant that he CAN win, an important first step to actually winning.

15. I hope you're right, but will she pull off Pub votes, or Dem?
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 11:24 AM by Neil Lisst
I haven't liked her ass since Scottie was a snotty nosed kid running around the Mayor's office.

Well, technically, I haven't liked her since right after she became a Republican. She's strictly an opportunist loyal only to herself. When they turncoat, they're dead to me.

17. I think if we have a credible Dem candidate
He will get the Dem vote. If not, I can see the possibility of Dems voting for CKMcCRS as the best chance of defeating Perry. I do think that Gammage has the best chance of passing that threshold of credibility... Bell could turn out like another Mauro/GWB sacrificial lamb. Although I have heard that now that he has a real primary opponent Chris has turned things up a notch or two... haven't had a chance to see him lately.

10. Hopefully by her running as an Independent..
..she'll siphon enough votes from Perry to cause him to lose to the Democrat?

14. Kinky is Texas' answer to Spuds McKenzie
I think he'll get most of his support from people who don't actually vote.

16. I love Kinky, but he's going to drain votes from the wrong direction.
IMO.

Kinky is equal parts Jim Hightower, Don Imus, Ross Perot, and Hunter Thompson. One weird dude, a decent author, and former frontman for the country western band KINKY FRIEDMAN & HIS TEXAS JEW BOYS.

12. Take Down of Perry
I think many Democrats are giving to Strayhorn in the hope that she will split the Republican vote with Perry and then allow Chris Bell to slip in as the Governor. These Democrats may think that they do not have to give that much money to Bell or do not have to give him money at all in that if the prop up the Strayhorn campaign Perry will be left with only the far right contingent of the Republican Party and then lose the race.

I believe people think a Democrat can win the governor's race in Texas; however, I think some of them think this is a great opportunity to pit two Republicans against each other and let the Democrat slip in for the win. I think many Democrats in Texas wanted either Kay Baily Hutchinson or Strayhorn to join the race so that it would be a really messy election that would divide the Republicans. Now something similar is happening with Strayhorn who is a Republican running as an independent in this race. I really think Democratic money is going to Strayhorn in the hopes of splitting the Republican vote and helping Bell to slip in for the win.
