Senate Democrats Set Record in Raising More Than Republicans
Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Senate Democrats, needing six seats to win control of the chamber in November, raised a record amount of funds last year and enter the 2006 campaign with more than twice as much money on hand as their Republican rivals.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee reported $25 million in the bank, compared with $10.5 million for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Republicans hold a 55-44 edge in the Senate with one independent who usually votes with Democrats.
The parties can make contributions directly to their nominees or spend their money on advertising and get-out-the-vote drives to support their candidates.
``Americans don't like what they're seeing in Washington and know that Democrats are the party of change,'' said Senator Charles Schumer of New York, chairman of the Democratic committee. ``The public knows that the best way to get the Senate focused on the needs of average Americans is to elect more Democrats, and that's why we have the wind at our backs.''
