Vogue magazine calls Russ Feingold "vulpine"
http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/local//index.php?ntid=70068

When a constituent at a listening session last November asked Sen. Russ Feingold to run for president, he told her about a fact-finding trip he'd taken to Iraq and Afghanistan with Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

"When we landed, all the soldiers ran up to Senator McCain," said Feingold, "and all the women ran up to Hillary. And I stood there alone, holding my bags."

This story is told in February's Vogue - the one with Drew Barrymore on the cover. Inside, John Powers pens a lengthy profile titled "Man of the Moment," calling Feingold "the most blogged-about Democrat since Howard Dean."

The article flits between policy (Feingold's votes against the Patriot Act and support of campaign finance reform) to his reputation as a "goo goo," Beltway slang for goody-goody. Bradley Whitford (the Madison native who plays Josh on "West Wing") is quoted: "I've never felt that Russ is acting, which as an actor is something I appreciate." Whitford's wife, actress Jane Kaczmarek, calls Feingold "very sexy." Apparently the author agrees, writing: "In person, Feingold cuts an attractive figure, natty and trim ("I'm a swimmer") with vulpine good looks."

Surely in Vogue, that vote counts.

vul·pine (vŭl'pīn')
adj.
Of, resembling, or characteristic of a fox.
Cunning; clever.

1. Maybe in character, not in looks.
What we do need is a fox to go after the chickenhawks, though. :)

8. I'm glad you posted this. It's a pretty nice article.
I thought it was a good summary of who Russ is. I live in Wisconsin so I thought it was interesting to see how he'd be portrayed to a national audience in a magazine like Vogue. I think it managed to get across why this state--even with some of our deeply red patches--is able to overcome some of that divide, or maybe just lose some of the apathy, and get together behind Russ. And, I'm glad they asked him about his divorces because his response was so human. Half the country is divorced, so this illusion that it's some kind of character flaw needs to be gotten over.

I'm starting to ramble but I do want to say that I think Russ, or if not, someone like him, could go a long way toward healing the joint. I'd be for that.
