For Amer. DUers who wonder about Canada's new Prime Minister
Here's an excellent CBC short documentary about Harper.

Jillian Finlay, the journalist who does the documentary does a very good job. This is not a hatchet job. It is a record of the path he took to becoming Prime Minister. There are interviews with people who knew him and helped him along the way. Even an interview with Preston Manning. Watching it, I had my instinctive feeling that he is a control freak verified. He has to have things HIS WAY.
Here's the link: http://www.cbc.ca/national/
click on WATCH THE NATIONAL ONLINE and it starts at about 25:50 on the video. It's about 20 minutes long.

1. yeah, of course...........
If you needed to verfiy that, all you needed to do was watch his wife and his mother.

BTW, his mother bears a very nasty resemblance, in looks, thoughts and deeds, to Barbara Bush.

3. Hi AX10....You've been in the Canada forum often warning us about
Harper....I'm thinking that his own ego might be his downfall. He just has to have things his own way and in a minority government, which he is heading, he has to co-operate with the other parties...We shall see...:)

6. You know what I'd like to see....
the CON government fall this fall (no pun intended), and the Canadian elections coincide with
the US mid-term elections on November 7th. The Libs and NDP win the government back with a majority and the Democrats retake both houses of the US Congress along with the state houses.
That would be beautiful.

As an American, I know first hand how bad "people" like Harper can be, ala Bush.

7. I don't think Canadians would want an election that soon.
As long as he can't do any real harm, which is the situation now since he has a small minority. I think we were pretty smart. I guess a lot of people thought it was time for a change, but we didn't want to give Harper a free hand so there was a lot of strategic voting....He has a short leash.

4. My question is this?
Thank goodness Canada has parties to put some balance on the Conservatives. But my real question is doesn't this give the Conservatives the chance to fall flat on their face?

Isn't he stepping on toes from the outset when he only got 36% of the vote and a lot of that was just Liberal opposition. If he is a little dictator aren't the people of Canada going to laugh at him and make fun of him? Isn't there a big smackdown coming on him when he shows an American-style madness?

I guess I could ask a simple question instead of that. How long do you think it will be until the next election?

5. It depends on whether he tries to push some of his more exteme
policies. He may be too smart for that, but he has a lot of right-wing neanderthals in his party. He managed to keep them muzzled during the campaign, but once parliament opens again, they may make trouble for him....Only time will tell....

8. so the Air Farce version of him is correct!
The Harper impersonator on that show frequently exclaims, "submit, or feel the wrath of my heat vision!".
