There is a scene in “Jaws” in which Captain Quint (Robert Shaw) gets the attention of the Amity Island town meeting by raking his fingernails across a blackboard before demanding $10,000 to catch the shark. It was an outrageous way to grab their attention, but it worked. There are two ways to look at the Captain Quint character – either he’s a salty resourceful man of the sea who demands our grudging respect, or he’s shark meat.
Unfortunately, I think, our Democratic “leadership” would choose to think of him as the latter. Democrats in Washington look as if they are always biding their time, searching for a strategy; they seem forever to be wondering if it’s
safe to go back into the water. They presumably approach all issue with a focus group poll in one hand and their d**k in the other. The Democratic “leadership” gives the impression that they are too paralyzed to step forward, and when someone in the ranks does, the rest appear to search for ways to distance themselves from the controversy.
A few months ago John Murtha, the top House Democrat on military spending, stunned Washington by calling for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq. When Murtha announced that our policy in Iraq was a failure and that we should immediately begin to develop a strategy for withdrawal, his Democratic colleagues mostly ran for cover. Even some who had praised him just after his announcement were parsing their words more carefully later on in the day.
Now, the Republicans have handed the Democrats one of the sweetest scandals in American history. Jack Abramoff, Republican "superlobbyist", is the central figure in a web of corruption within the U.S. Republican Party, which will likely be the most far-reaching in recent memory. This Abramoff deal could make Watergate look like a trip
down to the pond…chasing bluegills and tommycocks.
It is likely that Abramoff‘s cooperation with Federal prosecutors will lead to indictments of numerous Republican lawmakers, staffers, lobbyists, and operatives. This is not the time for Democrats to
cut bait – now is the time to ram the compressed air bottle down their gasping throats. The Democrats can not afford to be timid; it’s time to metaphorically rake those fingernails across the blackboard.
