Where's what you would call a Liberal site, but not Far Left?
I read DU daily. Multiple times daily. I post only when inspired to, but I am definitely addicted to DU.

However, sometimes I wonder what I guess one might call Mainstream Liberals are thinking. Here at DU I start to believe that everyone will leave the Democratic Party if Hillary is nominated or if Alito isn't fillibustered. I wonder what solid, good liberals in the country think. Not the edges of the party, which I believe must exist to make things move left, but those just left of center-left.

Just like I turn from Air America, which is on constantly, to listen to what the RW is spewing, sometimes I just want to hear what Mainstream Liberals are saying. To get a full picture. I just don't know where to look. Countdown may come closest to what I mean. Is there a blog or BB I might try?

1. If you think we are not "mainstream" then you need to shut off Fox News
We ARE mainstream Democrats. We're the base. We're the grassroots.

4. I can't keep Fox News on longer than 30 seconds.
I try to listen to what the other side says. I know where to find that.

I agree that many here are mainstream Democrats. When things get hot, the far left message comes thru stronger and somewhat moderate voices get uh, pushed. I am not complaining about this. I am addicted, as I said. I just wondered where I could read what more moderate, but not too moderate, Democrats posted, so I could better understand how the country was leaning.

2. I love reading the American Prospect
It's a monthly magazine started by Robert Reich. It is very what I would call mainstream American liberal - on the Democratic side of issues but without the screeching polemics of the far left that are so often found in the Nation, et al. I mean, if polemics are your thing, that's fine, but I prefer TAP because it has fact-filled articles that inform me instead of just ranting and raving op-eds that reinforce my biases.

3. we are all over the political spectrum right here
and not everyone is monolithic on every topic.

Describe what you consider "center" or "center-left" (rhetorical question).

Do you mean center in social policy, or center in fiscal policy? America does not have a center in all things. You will find some REAL republicans who are socially liberal and fiscally conservative and against the war, mockingly referred to by their own as "moderates", or RINO's because they don't advocate rounding up gays and gassing them.

This is a buffet. I would be suspicious of any place that has a limited menu - whoever is doing the limiting is defining the "center" for you, and that's not healthy. You have to do that for yourself.

7. Good question
I'm socially liberal (very, and in every way) and fiscally conservative (in the 'conserve' sense). Fiscally conservative in the sense the money to pay for my socially liberal programs comes from savings, and the rich have to be taxed. The liberal will win over the paying for it every time. Just want to be sure the programs can continue. I have voted Dem in every election since I could, have voted in EVERY election, and I'm 55.

But that's me. I'm looking for something online where I can read what center left is saying. Robert Reich is a good example.

9. How about this guy?
He's pretty much in the mainstream on most issues.

What gives you hope?

What gives me hope actually is public opinion. Public opinion in the United States is very well studied, we know a lot about it. It's rarely reported, but we know about it. And it turns out that, you know, I'm pretty much in the mainstream of public opinion on most issues. I'm not on some, not on gun control or creationism or something like that, but on most crucial issues, the ones we've been talking about, I find myself pretty much at the critical end, but within the spectrum of public opinion. I think that's a very hopeful sign. I think the United States ought to be an organizer's paradise.

8. There are moderates here, yes.
And I listen to Bernie Ward on KGO when Mike Malloy is on Air America. Bernie Ward is an example of the left of center I'm speaking of. Is there a blog or BB that best reflects that view? I just want another place to check for the pulse of the party as stuff happens. Like Fitzmas in Feb.

13. Thanks for these suggestions.
I'm adding them to my Bookmark Bar between Huffington Post and Firedoglake. AlterNet looks good too. I guess Huffington Post does fit what I'm asking about. It's good to know others, so I ask here.

And is there some super-super liberal site where they call Mike Malloy a member of the DLC?

17. I think they mean that
at Malloys they refer to DU as 'DLC Underground'

I agree that DU is pretty moderate - it certainly isn't 'far left', IMO.

18. You go super-super-super far left
and you end up on the other side. I was shocked by a recent link to the John Birch Society site to find they believe a lot of what we do, when you ignore the racist stuff. Hard to ignore though, right.

19. this place is VERY mainstream
chomsky gets dismissed as a crank regularly here. there is rarely any discussion of radical left political theory, such as anarchism, that does not dismiss it also. nader is hated. greens are tolerated, but not at the cost of the democratic party. socialism is not popular here. the contents of Adbusters magazine are not welcome.

this place IS what you seek.

I am looking for other sites to cruise when topics get hot. To take the temperature of the country.

And thanks.
