Should Reid be replaced as Minority Leader?
I'm serious. Why is it up to Kerry and Kennedy to rally support for a filibuster? This is Reid's job! What's the matter with him if he can't rally his caucus around an issue so important, and about which Democrats around the country are demanding action? I think he's a nice man and has good intentions, but I don't know if he has the kind of leadership qualities we need at this pivotal point in history. We need a fighter, like, er, Howard Dean.
If only could clone him. :(

1. I'm reserving judgement until I see how this goes.
There may be a strategic reason for doing it this way.

39. Same here
He's done well before so I'm waiting to see. He's now supporting Kerry so hopefully it'll work out.

2. How do you know he's not?
I mean really - just because he's not front and center doesn't mean he isn't doing anything. There's a lot going on here we don't know about and don't understand. Calling to replace Reid seems premature.

My own senators played their cards pretty close to the vest.

I'm hoping he's playing poker, but they haven't shown their hand yet.

4. No
And it's entirely possible that Kerry and Kennedy are rallying support at Reid's behest.

I was iffy on Harry when he took over, but I think he's pretty shrewd and he's not afraid to speak his mind.

There's more to Reid than meets the eye, IMHO.

9. All kinds of deals get made
Reid and others recognize that Senator's such as Nelson of Nebraska who are not only from blood red states, but up for re-election this year may bow to necessity. it's more important to Reid and most likely every other Senator to gain the majority this fall, than to have everybody vote in lockstep. Politics is the art of the possible. And frankly, I see the name calling as pathetic. You can disagree with someone strongly, condemn their actions strongly without resorting to ad hominem attacks.

We have to start standing up to these thugs now. If we don't 2006 won't even matter. Whoever won't filibuster is probably beyond name calling but it's all I do from these keyboards until the rat bastards are up for re-election.

6. Abso-friggin-lutely NOT!
Although it may not look like it, the Democratic caucus has been more united than ever. Reid has gotten a lot more done with 45 Democrats than Daschle did with 48. In my opinion, he has done a very good job.

Obviously anybody who DARES to voice any dissent against YOUR view of things on this board is labeled a Republican. I have worked as hard as anybody here to elect Kerry and others. You have permanently discredited yourself to me with such a stupid and outrageous personal attack on another Democrat, who simply disagrees with you.

Both of you are correct about DU's rules. The Rules, in part, read as follows:

Do not publicly accuse another member of this message board of being a disruptor, conservative, Republican, FReeper, or troll, or do not otherwise imply they are not welcome on Democratic Underground.

Do not say that you are hitting the alert link to report another member. You are permitted to tell someone that you are adding them to your ignore list, provided that you actually do so.

I am happy the two of you have decided to cease fire. Now that things have cooled off a bit, you might both want to take a few minutes to review the DU Discussion Forum Rules in detail at the link above.

Thanks,
Your Friendly Moderator

11. ?
Since becoming minority leader, Reid has

1) Led the effort to derail Bush's social security proposal

2) Forced the special Senate session to debate the Iraq War

3) Opposed John Roberts (Leahy and Feingold supported Roberts).

4) Organized opposition to Bush's wiretapping and the Patriot Act

5) Kept ANWR alive and come out hard against Bush's budget proposals

6) Pushed for an investigation into the actions of the NSA

7) A zillion other things which other minority leaders whould not have done

You want to replace him for not backing a filibuster that will certainly fail and make us look like a party of lame ducks. I'm beginning to see why the leadership position is a thankless job, what with how quickly people here turn on our most valuable members.

Read Charlie Brown's post # 11. Reid has been quite effective, and I like the man. I want him to filibuster, and he still may change his mind. If he doesn't, I will still be supportive.

36. Reid is doing a very good job
So he can't get every single Democratic Senator to agree on big issues. That doesn't mean he's not doing a good job.

Democrats in the Senate (which is designed to be cautious and compromising) range from Boxer and Kennedy to Nelson and Johnson. That's a very big tent, and Reid does an admirable job of trying to keep everyone under it. It's not always possible.

38. Harry Reid is terrible, and should be replaced.
Forget leadership, which he is sorely lacking. This guy can't say "hello" without consulting his notes. He's a terrible public speaker, and is a complete waste of TV air time. Same for Pelosi.

We live in a TV age, and if you suck on TV, you have no business being on TV. They both need to sit down, let someone else run the leadership, and help. But they won't, because their egos run them, not their desire to do what is best for the party.

Build up suspense in the media. PLUS get the Democratic :dem: Base (that means US) hopping :bounce: mad :grr: so that we overwhelm DC with our messages about Alito.

If the Dems do this in response to a groundswell of public opinion rather than as a minority party it creates a very different effect. PLus, hold outs are more likely to go along with the Democratic herd.

Still think we need an Anita Hill, some woman who will say "Alito told me he would definitely outlaw abortion.".

Now, we know how lazy the Democratic base is. If the DEms said "We have the filibuster in the bag" we would all sit back and enjoy our weekend and maybe fuss at Hilary for not being left wing enough or Kerry for voting for the war.

If I lived on the east coast, I would take a train into DC this weekend and do an impromptu rally around Congress demanding a filbuster of Alito. That would be eye catching.
