Army seized wives to `leverage' surrender of Iraqi insurgents.
(AP, Jan. 27, 2006 2:02 PM)

The U.S. Army in Iraq has at least twice seized and jailed the wives of suspected insurgents in hopes of "leveraging" their husbands into surrender, U.S. military documents show.

In one case, a secretive task force locked up the young mother of a nursing baby, a U.S. intelligence officer reported. In the case of a second detainee, one American colonel suggested to another that they catch her husband by tacking a note to the family's door telling him "to come get his wife."

5. The ends don't justify the means.
There is no line between ends and means.

This is disgusting behavior.

It is also against the Geneva Conventions to take hostages.

We pay the salaries of these kidnappers. We have a right to know their names.

6. Oh my god. Tearing a nursing baby away from its mommy.
Her milk probably dried up and who knows if the child survived if they didn't have adequate formula supplies or clean water to mix it or even if the child died from an illness that could have been avoided if left in the custody of its mommy. It breaks my heart, thinking about how our people could perpetrate this on a family.

7. One question:
What would Bush call someone who did this to Americans?

He should be ashamed.

8. Says something about the news cycle...
... because this sort of thing was happening--and was reported upon--in the summer and fall of 2003, especially in the case of wanted former Ba'athist officials.

So, mention of two instances recently doesn't square with the earlier reporting--this has been going on for longer and with more members of families than this AP reports suggests.
