US watches China's rising star with anxiety

Fri Jan 27, 9:52 AM ET

Top US officials, recognizing China's growing influence, say they are trying to persuade Beijing to act as a "responsible actor" on the world stage amid disagreements and rivalry between the two powers.

With China's rising star dominating the World Economic Forum in Davos, US representatives sounded a note of apprehension about Beijing's diplomacy.

...

"Now, the rise of China is something we don't only take note of, but we believe that there is an obligation by all of the powers, but perhaps particularly the United States, to engage in policies that will encourage ... the responsible stakeholder China, the China that sees it has an obligation in the international system to promote and, in fact, to defend peace and security," Rice said Thursday in a video conference at the Davos event.

...

Washington has been lobbying China to set aside its economic appetite for oil and back calls for Iran to be referred to the UN Security Council over its nuclear program.

1. So the capitalists fear a capitalist China.
next they'll not have international relations with duly elected democratic governments. No wait, with Hamas that just happened.

2. RIGHT China should stay away from IRAN while BushCO occupy IRAQ.
I am sure they will fall for that.

5. Let me see...
In the 1950s, the Soviet Union was a monolith that was going to eat up the world, and we were a dwindling power that was helplessly going under in the face of the Wave of the Future. Then in the 60s, after the Soviet Union lost some of its potency as a threat, Red China was the boogeyman. We were in Vietnam to counter Chinese influence--remember? Despite the fact that China and Vietnam had centuries, millenia, of hostility...but never mind... Then in the 1970s, it was the Arabs turn. OPEC was invincible, we were finished, the West was finished, the shieks were going to rule the world and nothing could stop it. Then in the 1980s--the Japanese!!! They were invincible, they were overtaking the US and there was absoluterly nothing we could do about it, it was as inevitable as the sunrise tomorrow... Then the Cold War ended, the Japanese economy went into the tank, and we were suddenly left without a boogeyman. The problem in the 90s was how to wisely use American hegemony, which was inevitable, as certain as the sunrise tomorrow, etc, etc... Now we're overstretched, under attack from them evil terrorists, totally bankrupt--and here comes China again!!! They're the Wave of the Future, their dominance in as certain as the sunrise tomorrow, it's inevitable, we're helpless, etc, etc... Excuse me if I'm not totally convinced...
