Chris Matthews Tied to Jack Abramoff

January 4, 2006

I have certainly written about Chris Matthews and his propensity for toeing the Republican Party line as well as using his show for a platform to excuse the abuses of the Bush administration and the GOP controlled Congress. It was just last month when Matthews exclaimed that “everyone likes this president except the real whack-jobs on the left.” Recently, Matthews has used his show to play softball with anyone willing to minimize the impending Jack Abramoff corruption scandal or try and turn it into a bipartisan event. Now it seems we know why.

According to sourcewatch.com, the following is a breakdown of some of the dealings of CAF:

• In 2001, CAF received $1 million from the Coushatta and $177,415 from Foxcom.
• The Coushatta apparently believed that the donation was for a sky box from which Abramoff would lobby Members of Congress during Redskins games.
• In 2002, CAF collected $2.56 million from 9 donors including 3 tribes.
• In 2003, CAF collected $2.15 million from tribes, Michael Scanlon and an internet casino client of Abramoff’s. $2.13 million of the money went to the Eshkol Academy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/eshkol_academy), a school started by Abramoff.
• In a February 2003 email, Abramoff told Scanlon to make sure that his share of money went to Eshkol directly – 'using school as conduit for some of our activities . .. If that won’t fly with them, use CAF.'
• CAF also paid $120,000 in August 2002 for Abramoff, Robert W. Ney, Ralph E. Reed, Jr., and then-General Services Administration Chief of Staff David Safavian "to St. Andrews to play golf with a stop in London on way back. Ney later claimed that the trip’s purpose was to raise money for a foundation, but there were no fundraising events during the course of the trip."
So we have a sleazy lobbyist in bed with a lot of sleazy politicians, all of which are from the GOP. They use a fake charity to provide themselves with junkets around the world such as golfing at St. Andrews in Scotland. This is where Chris Matthews comes in. On March 5, 2003, Matthews helped put on a charity event for the purpose of raising $300,000 for the Capital Athletic Foundation. According to sourcewatch.com:

Daily Kos is reporting today that Mr. Matthews has ties to Mr. Abramoff and the details of those ties presents ethical problems for someone pretending to be a journalist. Jack Abramoff is the former super-lobbyist who bilked millions upon millions of dollars from his clients, bribed numerous republican congressmen, and even paid to have things inserted into the congressional record from those he did “business” with. Amongst the slime of Mr. Abramoff, he also ran a faux charity called the “Capital Athletic Foundation”, which allegedly was designed to provide sports related programs for youth. Instead, Jack used the charity as a front to funnel money in and out of to provide perks to the Congressmen he was bribing and doing business with. The reality is that less than ONE percent of the revenue of the Capital Athletic Foundation (CAF) actually went to sports related programs for youth. CAF was actually used to fund the overseas trips for Tom Delay and others we are starting to hear so much about.

Hardball's Chris Matthews, FOX's Tony Snow and Britt Hume helped raise money for shady Abramoff charity
by John in DC - 1/04/2006 12:43:00 AM

UPDATE: Not that it changes anything, but the event was canceled at the last minute since we invaded Iraq right before it was to take place. The fact still remains that Matthews, Snow and Hume agreed to host an apparently all-Republican fundraiser for Abramoff's shady charity.

Interactive Spy Game Gala"
On March 5, 2003, Paul Bond of The Hollywood Reporter announced (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1830226) the March 26, 2003, celebrity fundraiser "Interactive Spy Game Gala" to be held at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC, "to raise about $300,000 for the Capital Athletic Foundation."

"Daniel Greenberg, who works as creative director for the J.R.R. Tolkien franchise for Universal Interactive, has tapped his brother Andrew, also an award-winning video game designer, and theatrical director Patti Woolsey for the Spy Game Gala. About 30 teams of about 10 people each are to interact with 15 actors who will reveal clues for solving puzzles that will eventually reveal the mystery Greenberg has created. The competition will last about an hour, and the winning team will get $50,000 in prizes."
"Being honored at the gala with the Capital Athletic Foundation's first lifetime achievement award is full-time philanthropist James Kimsey, the founding chairman of America Online."

"The gala is to be chaired by Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, so the NFL will be well-represented. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis will be there, and record-setting Philadelphia Eagles return man Brian Mitchell has signed on as event spokesman." "Fox News Channel's Tony Snow is master of ceremonies, and Fox's Brit Hume and MSNBC's Chris Matthews are aboard. Opera great Placido Domingo is an event committee member. But, this being Washington, the event will be mostly populated by powerful lawmakers, including Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas; Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa.; and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif."

Also named in the announcement was the "foundation's director of community relations," Julie Doolittle, the wife of Representative John Doolittle (R-California).

1% for the cover (poor kids/sports/inner city) 99% pay-for-play legislation. What a self-protecting business-political racket. The Republican Syndicate.

I suspect most or all self-described 'sucessful Republican businessmen' all would be failures in their chosen careers, except that they are funded through Republican government administrations.

25. Amoral. I've come to see him as simply amoral.
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 11:38 PM by RazzleDazzle
Perhaps not on all issues and subjects, but certainly when it comes to politics he just doesn't have a moral core. He thinks whoever is more powerful is a-okay, no matter where that power comes from. Brute force is perfetly okay with him.

I'v e been aghast at so many things I've heard come out of his mouth lately -- not the least of which was asking a former "interrogator" in Iraq, someone who came forward as something of a whistleblower now that he's out, such things as "how did it feel to" torture people, and "did it bother you" to use those tactics on someone "very religious"? DISGUSTING, utterly disgusting, and these are only two rather small examples.

But the best may be yet to come: today I saw a clip of his interview to be broadcast on Monday with Tom Delay. There seems to be no recognition or acknowledgment -- certainly not in the clip he showed -- that there's anything morally wrong with Delay at all. Matthews was talking to him just like an old buddy. It made me want to hurl. One of these days very soon I'll be giving up cable TV all together, for my health and sanity.

29. I dislike Tweety as much as anybody but I can't see anything
criminal in agreeing to host a benefit. It is not even unethical unless he knew that the "charity"
was actually a money laundry. Am I missing something?
There is plenty to condemn tweety for without using this tactic. The republicans use this sort of smear all the time and I hate it. We are better than this.

32. It isn't the fundraiser that is the issue
it is his uneven reporting/writing/coverage per the whole Abramoff story that is the problem - it is in his best interest that the story not go too deep lest his own reputation in shilling for a disreputable (dare we say illegally acting) organization per the fundraiser come to light and damage his own reputation - even if his primary role is as dupe (as in he did no research as to what the organization funds and just played front man to curry favor with the "most powerful lobbyist in DC").

The condemnation is perhaps the conflict of interest in his reporting/writing/coverage - that is, make it seem like no real big deal - make it seem a bigger picture of all congressmen (both parties) being a tad bit tainted by it - so no need to dig deeper... in an effort perhaps to keep his own story (as dupe? or worse?) pretty much out of the public eye. Eg coverage that is self-interested rather over coverage that informs the public per facts known in the case.
