Help me out here - what ARE Republican "Family Values"?
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 02:13 AM by johnaries
I'm thinking back to the mid-90's, when some reporter asked some woman why she supported the Repukes, and she said "because they stand for Family Values". The reporter then asked "What are Family Values"?.... The woman couldn't answer. She had no idea. But it sounded good!

I'd like to create a list of what Republicans seem to consider "Family Values" are, based on their stances and platforms since the mid-90's.

I'll get the list started. I'll get the list started, and I'd like to point out that the Reublicans are the ones who claim they are AGAINST "big" government and support "less" government interference (although "less government interference" seems to only apply to Major Corporations).

Republican Family Values List

1. The Government decides whether you can live or die (reference: Capital Punishment, Assisted Suicide, Terri Schiavo, etc.)

2. The Government decides whether or not you should have children. (Re: Abortion, Birth Control)

3. The Government decides who can or cannot marry.

4. The Government decides who you can or cannot have sex with.

5. The Government decides if you should or should not endure chronic pain (re: medical marijuana)

6. The Government decides what parts of your life can be "secret" and what parts are open to public scrutiny (R: Right to Privacy)

7. The government decides what movies or TV shows you can watch.

Well, that's what I though of, just off the top of my head. Who can complete the list?

Once the list is complete, can we circulate it to let the people who support Republican Family Values know just what they are really up to?

edit to add #7

1. The government takes the family's first
born male child to be used as cannon fodder in its eternal war machine.

3. phht. And the Repubs still campaign on "less government."
:eyes:

I saw a really weird interview with the head of some kind of Fundy Christian group when they were bitchin about that tv show "Book of Daniel." Her biggest objection was that the show would portray God as "tolerant of things! Forgiving and accepting!" She really meant it. Creepy.

6. They talk about family values like Bush talks about...
"Compassionate conservatism". It's a nice buzz-phrase designed to give people who don't like to pay attention warm fuzzy feelings. But when it comes down to it, their "family values" amount to little more than a whole lot of talk. Maybe I was brought up funny, but I thought acceptance and love were central to "family values". I always thought that from those two things, everything else would follow. But apparently, if I have a gay son I should disown him. If my daughter wants an abortion, I should bring her to church. Etc. Etc. Etc.

It's the same thing as "culture of life". It's beyond me how a party that respects and wants to cultivate a "culture of life" would, by a vast majority, support the use of the death penalty, engage in certainly questionably supported wars that result in 30,000 - 100,000 civilian deaths and 2,000+ deaths of American soldiers, support repressive regimes (i.e. Saudi Arabia), and keep funneling money away from the poorest of our population to serve the interests of the upper-income tax brackets.

7. Let's see. 1. Don't get caught buggering children.
2. When you get caught cheating on your spouse, cry buckets full of tears and talk about how Jesus has forgiven your sins.

3. The best time to tell your wife that you're divorcing her is when she's groggy from getting out of cancer surgery (courtesy of Newt Gingrich).

4. It's a good thing to leave your wife and children dependent on church handouts for survival after you leave them (also courtesy of Newt Gingrich).

5. It's okay, as an elected public official, to try to move your mistress into the house that you're still living in with your wife and children, as long as your a Republican. Being a Republican shows people that you're still a moral person.

That's what I thought of off the top of my head.

8. 1. Kinky sex, fetishistic tendencies and spanking
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 02:46 AM by bliss_eternal
are fine with a pro domme NOT within the confines of a good, moral, Christian relationship. (ALL OF THEM!)

2. Pornography and the women in the industry are to be judged, condemned and painted with scarlet W's for whore--unless they come on the show. When they appear, wait til the show is over and innocently ask the guest (Jenna Jamison) to send you some of her work. You're just curious to 'see what she does. For research, of course.' (re: Bill O'Reilly)

3. When someone that works with you turns up dead, NEVER submit yourself to questioning or speculation. There's no way in hell it's your fault, and everyone had better damned know it--afterall, you're a republican! ...She of course had pre-existing conditions that even her family wasn't initially aware of, not until you and the medical examiner (with a sketchy record) told them so. (re: Joe Scarborough)

4. Hard work is for suckers. It's only necessary when you aren't white, born wealthy, or given opportunities based on nepotism. Ivy league education--no problem! Governor though you lack political ambition--nothin' to it! You're a republican! (re: the shrub)

5. Children are sex crazed, alcoholic binging, coke-fiends with expense accounts. Oh, did I leave out shoplifters?(re: shrub and jeb's kids)

6. Your wife doesn't have to LIVE with you--what the hell for? She's free to pursue her interesting hobbies of duty free shopping in foreign lands, attempting to smuggle items back--while you're free to 'entertain' co-workers after hours. ;) (re: jeb bush)

7. War and other such ugly things aren't relevant when you have a beautiful republican mind, filled with quaint, cute (bigoted) sayings about people that have lost their homes to a tragedy. (re:babs bush)

8. Abortion is murder--UNLESS you are ridding the world of black babies, that will only grow up and commit crimes anyway. (re: b. bennett)

9. Republican Family Values
1) All Good Christians know that it is not a sin to blow up and torture Iraqi Families.

2) It is not a sin to: starve, flood, oppress, undereducate, spew with chemicals, or deny voting rights to non-white, non-Christian Families.

3) As long as your Family looks nice and clean - good clothes, Big Hair, McMansion, weekly schlep to Sunday School and Bush/Cheney sticker on car - your Family can have all manner of affairs, financial scandals, abortions and addictions it pleases.

4)God only loves and blesses Fundamentalist Christian Families with a mother and father and 5.7 children. Therefore, the US government should not bless any Family deviating from this model and should, instead, place stumbling blocks in front of these families so that they die off in greater numbers. God laughs and is happy when they die.

5) Fuck your family. My family stole, lied and cheated so we've got ours!!!!!

maybe that's number 6. :silly:

or maybe #7 could be modified to state what the government deems as "obscene" will limit your viewing of said movies/TV.

17. And don't forget, divorce is for
rich people. Newt, of all people..., wanted to make divorce harder to obtain. For poor people. Conservatives love divorce for rich people. They just can't get enough divorces. Meanwhile, here in Georgia, we've got yet another "stop divorce for poor people" initiative.
Can you imagine the spoiled brat screaming if Bob Dole, or Newt, or Rush, or Ted Olsen, or any of the other of the long, long list of fatcat conservatives with multiple divorces had to wait to unload their exes? If THEY had to wait a year and undergo forced "counseliing" before they could get their divorce?
Once again. Two Americas.
Theirs. And ours.
The rules just don't apply.
Hypocrites consider conservatives gods.
