1. I have been poking around these threads and I confess
I am still baffled. I understand the "work" that our computers are doing, and the value of the work. But the nuts and bolts of getting involved are apparently a "given".
If a non-techie goes to the sites, the download options are listed, but not explained. I don't see a place where we can "sign up" for team #48157... I put my name (apparently unassigned) in the designated space, but when the "dos"-y stuff starts scrolling by, I see the <<anonymous>> tag in there somewhere...So I canel the download...

Could someone slow down long enough to walk the illiterate though the process?

2. That's a very good point. Tell ya what.....
I'll work up a FAQ and try and get that posted up someplace today.

I think it would be a big help for people who are unsure of where to start.

3. Thanks!
I would love to get involved, and my machine is on a cable connection all day, but I get nervous when it starts "looking different" than what I'm used to. (lol- dos freaks me out!). When you get a FAQ pulled together, could you PM me so I don't miss it?

13. Thank you in advance for the FAQ.
It's a really good idea.

Even though I've already downloaded and am running the program, I could've used a 'talk to me like I'm 5 and learning to tie my shoes' FAQ. It could save others a lot of fumbling around, ease some doubts, and just generally be a great addition to these threads.

4. On the download you can "pick" a name
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 07:45 AM by wakeme2008
but all that does is check that the name is not in use. Once you download the program, the first time it starts it will ask you for a name and team number. You have to know DU team number.

It will ask a couple more questions that ask if you are behind a proxy (which does not work) and if you want it to download new work or ask your permittion to download new work.

Also this IMHO IMHO IMHO should not be run on a laptop. The program is CPU bound and will cause the CPU chip to run hot.

Hope this helps.

The Former Folder - Tuxedo-programmer. :(

7. FYI, the DU team # is 48157 for those wanting to go ahead and try
As for laptops, well, I ran SETI@Home for the last 4 1/2 years on my laptop 24/7 and I'm now running F@H 24/7 on it.

5. I too am techy illiterate...but everyone on the first thread seemed to
know exactly what to do, and some who asked questions got answers that seemed to satisfy them, but did not help me figure it out, so I just went on my merry way. But if I COULD figure it out, I would be happy to participate. I am on dial up but others said they were too, so that seems not to be a problem? I have Zone Alarm Pro on my computer and barely know how to work it.

8. Right, dial-up isn't an issue. The work units aren't that large.

12. After it's downloaded,
if you right click on the little red flower icon on the computer's taskbar-

one of the options is 'Configure'

That's where I entered my user name as 'soup' and team #48157. Seems to have worked. Credit is given on the DU fold@home site for the 2 work units completed so far.

Should probably mention I'm using Windows XP. It might be different for different operating systems. I know nothing.

The work unit on my son's (newer and much faster) computer isn't scheduled for completion until October.

14. We are winners!

The Du folding@home team is surely winning! Especially if we can continue the torrid pace of new participants joining our team. We are kicking butt (so to speak), folding proteins and soon enough we will be crushing the ignorant freepers, our only competition.

15. I now have 5/400 when do I show up on the DU list? I see one with 9?
I hope I joined the correct group...would hate to mistakenly be in the freeper folding room!

19. When you finish that unit.
That 5/400 is the progress on the WU (work unit) that you are currently folding. Once it finishes you will receive credit for that work unit and show up on the group list. You will receive a score for completing that WU which will vary depending upon the size of the WU.

16. I joined but my iMac G5 got a little warm running it.

Think I'll put it on the mini mac which runs much cooler (but slower).

18. Help! I started this, but had to re-boot this evening. Now I don't have
the icon in my taskbar. How do I get it back? I was about 30% done with my first work unit.

20. No taskbar icon
Make sure the program is still there. (Assuming Windows XP)Click Start>All Programs>Folding@Home>Folding@Home5.00 If the Folding@Home item isnt there, well we got a minor problem. ;) Hopefully it is there and clicking the Folding@Home5.00 item will start it back up for ya. If not a re-install may be necessary. But before doing that, give the machine a 3-finger salute (Ctrl+Alt+Del)to bring up Task Manager to check what processes are running. If FahCore_xx.exe is listed, the F@H program is already running. Not sure why the taskbar icon wouldnt show up tho....
You could give a look here for more info about the graphical client: http://folding.stanford.edu/winstructions.html
