STEPPENWOLF: "Suicide" More true today than in 1969 |
|
One of those long lost songs in your head, that when played start you to think about current events more than the events in the day it was written. This song is one of those songs and while sitting in my car, This song was being played on a local radio station as a flashback but it rings true more now than ever. The whole album is a timeless statement considering the times.
Suicide by Steppenwolf - Title Album "Monster" (1969) The spirit was freedom and justice And it's keepers seem generous and kind It's leaders were supposed to serve the country But now they won't pay it no mind 'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy And now their vote is a meaningless joke They babble about law and order But it's all just an echo of what they've been told Yeah, there's a monster on the loose It's got our heads into a noose And it just sits there watchin'
Our cities have turned into jungles And corruption is stranglin' the land The police force is watching the people And the people just can't understand We don't know how to mind our own business 'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us Now we are fighting a war over there No matter who's the winner We can't pay the cost 'Cause there's a monster on the loose It's got our heads into a noose And it just sits there watching

that album. The entire "Monster" is great. I've had the album since it came out, and bought the CD a few years back. It is an apt description of today.

It is amazing how many songs from the 60's were speaking about what was happening then is exactly what is happening now. I just heard a song from Jackson Brown, though it was from the 80's that speaks as consisely now as it did then:
LIVES IN THE BALANCE By Jackson Brown
I've been waiting for something to happen For a week or a month or a year With the blood in the ink of the headlines And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember When you know that you've seen it before Where a government lies to a people And a country is drifting to war
And there's a shadow on the faces Of the men who send the guns To the wars that are fought in places Where their business interest runs
On the radio talk shows and the T.V. You hear one thing again and again How the U.S.A. stands for freedom And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends-- These governments killing their own? Or the people who finally can't take any more And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance There are people under fire There are children at the cannons And there is blood on the wire There's a shadow on the faces Of the men who fan the flames Of the wars that are fought in places Where we can't even say the names
They sell us the President the same way They sell us our clothes and our cars They sell us every thing from youth to religion The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are I want to hear somebody asking them why They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance There are people under fire There are children at the cannons And there is blood on the wire

4. They seem almost prophetic don't they? |
|
And there are a lot more just like these. Perhaps the muse of music is also a profit of the future.
