used on political opponents if there are no warrants and no transparent records?"

These are questions that are asked here, but never of *, Cheney and McLellan. Make 'em deny it on video.

2. Good question......
I think most people assume it is going on. Where it was a big deal during Watergate, it's small potatoes now. To the repugs' way of thinking, if that's what it takes to "keep us safe," then do it.

The dems should be screaming bloody murder!! The country should be screaming! All I hear is yawns and calls for congressional "hearings."

3. if we can't muster a filibuster, it's because they're blackmailing us
filibustering alito on a party line basis is a straight power issue for democrats.
from a power perspective, the upside is huge, and the downside of not filibustering, or of a failed effort at this point, is also huge.

do democrats have any power at all or no power at all? if we can't filibuster when shrub is at 36% with abramoff, delay, ney, cunningham scandals, not to mention plame and spygate swirling around, then we are 100% impotent.

democrats can't not know this.

if we can't filibuster, any democrat voting for cloture is being blackmailed and/or bribed. i simply can't think of another reason a democrat would undermine the democrats' power like that.

5. I can think of several reasons besides being blackmailed and/or bribed.

How about the voters in their states. Several Senators are in red states and are receiving lots of pressure.

Does the party absolutely no good to lose their seat to a rethug. Their isn't a sitting Senator willing to put party principles over their personal power.

Even Byrd knows who butters his bread. VW are for the most part red, religious and conservative. He is running for re-election.

7. i can't see wv holding a party-line vote against him
especially, at this point, if it keeps the banana republican power slightly at bay.

the vast majority of the country favors DIVIDED GOVERNMENT. even conservatives do not like it when one party has this much power.

10. Senator Byrd seems to think VW will not like his vote against Alito
If you listened to his speech, based on what he said, he is either beholden to his voters or completely senile.

6. Ask any repuke you will get two answers
One will be: Clinton did it. That is the standard response to any accusation against the dictator.

The second response you get: The people doing the spying are good people and they only are looking for terrorist.
YEAH RIGHT!

11. i am sure helen thomas would've asked all of the questions we're dying to
hear answers to form the lips of dictator bush...he seems to know that as well, therefore, he ignores (or ignored) helen thomas at the one recent piss conference the tyrant and his presstitude court held not too long ago.

helen thomas = the jonathan livingston seagull of the press . she marches to a different tune. the tune of truth and facts! she is more courageous than the three bushes put together.

13. Because the media is giddy at the prospect...
Also, doesn't want their own naked pictures out...
How many here think that the successful suppresion of the W&Abramoff pictures was due to media outlets fearing snoop obtained retaliation?
